Kody Brown Claims Janelle and Christine BEGGED Him To Marry Them

Sister Wives patriarch Kody Brown claims that both Janelle and Christine Brown eagerly “begged,” him to be a part of his life as wives before they officially joined the polygamous clan.

The bold claim has not only raised eyebrows but also set the stage for potential disputes and discussions about the true nature of their respective courtships in the Sunday, September 10 episode of Sister Wives.

In the preview, Kody Brown sheds light on several “distinct prerequisites,” he had laid out for his former spouses — Janelle and Christine Brown.

During a candid disclosure, he also admits to having stretched himself too thin trying to meet the needs and expectations of all four of his wives.

In a talking head confessional, Kody Brown brings up the concept he dubs “sacred loneliness,” a phrase he uses to characterize the experience of women in polygamous marriages, illustrating the prolonged periods they spend alone due to their husband dividing his time among multiple spouses.

“Sacred loneliness? Like you’re supposed to honor the fact that you’re lonely?” Christine can’t help but chuckle as she hears Kody’s remarks.

Janelle Brown shares her perspective on the term, noting, “The idea is that you sacrifice some of your emotional needs because you want to live in a plural marriage… I’ve always thought it was so dumb. Sorry.”

Meri Brown then shares her own thoughts, pointing out that she frequently hears Kody discuss the challenges women encounter in plural marriages, and goes on to add, “It’s like, really, now you figured that out?”

While Robyn Brown acknowledges, “Yeah, plural marriage can be lonely.” However, “it’s an opportunity for you to get a relationship with God.”

In a different segment of the episode, Kody Brown is seen having a conversation with Nathan. During their talk, Kody acknowledges the emotional hardships that women can endure in plural marriages. Despite this acknowledgment, he confesses that he has grown “tired of hearing about the struggle.”

Kody emphasizes that all of his wives willingly entered into this arrangement with a clear understanding of what it entails, noting — “they all agreed that they were going to do this.”

In a confessional segment, Mitch shares his perspective, expressing that until, “You’ve sat in the seat and been a guy that’s had four wives and tried to meet the emotional, spiritual, physical, mental needs of four women,” it’s hard to speak confidently on the matter. “There’s a hubris that comes with judgement,” he asserts.

In a separate confessional, Kody tries to justify his stance, providing his own take on the situation.

“I courted Meri and I courted Robyn, but Christine and Janelle both asked if they could be in the family,” he explains. “And with that ask, I had some special requirements that I wanted them to meet in order to come into the family and mainly that was there’ll be other wives, you’ve got to be committed to me.”

Meanwhile, Janelle takes a moment to set the record straight about Kody’s assertions regarding her and Christine’s request to be a part of the family — emphasizing that the two didn’t exactly proceed in the manner Kody described.

“It’s improper for a man to be out chasing wives,” she says. “It’s generally a woman [that] approaches the family and says, ‘Look, I feel like I had a spiritual revelation that maybe I belong in your family.’ He now keeps saying Christine and I asked to be in the family and Robyn was invited.”

Janelle continues, “Somehow because Christine and I asked, we deserve less [and] we should be happy with what we got? It wasn’t like we were begging to be in the family. We simply asked, there was a courtship and then we all got married.”

In November 2021, Christine went public with her decision to exit the polygamous union. Following this, the December 2022 airing of the Sister Wives: One on One special disclosed additional cracks in the family dynamics — both Meri and Janelle declared their separation from the family’s chief, Kody. As it stands, Robyn Brown is the solitary figure maintaining a marital connection to Kody.

Sister Wives airs on Sundays, at 10 pm EDT, on TLC.
