Kandi Burruss Quits #Xscape Reunion — Says She’s Tired of Playing the ‘Villain’ Role!
Bravo’s Xscape: Still Kickin’ It reality series follows the multi-platinum hit ’90s girl group, Xscape, as they make their triumphant return to the stage after nearly 20 years apart.
The ladies of Xscape stopped by What Watch Happens Live last Sunday and things became very awkward, when Kandi Burruss said she was not going to participate in the new music that the rest of the group was working on.
It seemed weird considering the fact that if a music group is going to go on tour together and has a TV show together, that if they were going to make new music, well, it would be together.
After the awkward interview — the internet went nuts slamming The Real Housewives of Atlanta star.
Kandi is now speaking out in an interview to explain her side.
“A network was going to do an unauthorized movie about us, and of course I’m not going to let somebody just take my legacy.” Kandi tells People. “So I called my group members and we were all able to have a conversation to start trying to get our story told the right way.”
As fans of the show know — Kandi, Tiny Cottle and sisters Tamika Scott and LaTocha Scott had some old drama surrounding allegations that Tamika made about Kandi breaking up the group. Tamika stated in an interview that the group broke up because Kandi slept with their label head Jermaine Dupri and his father, music industry executive Michael Mauldin.
“I was like, I need a public apology,” Burruss says. “She’s going to have to say to the world that the stuff that she said about me was a lie. And so in doing that — we did it on the radio — and the radio disc jockey, he’s like, ‘Oh, Xscape is back!’ I was like, ‘Xscape is not back!’ All of a sudden we started getting all these offers to perform and do shows, so I just went with the flow for the moment.”
Kandi later admitted in a 2010 interview that she had been with Jermaine Dupri, but not his father.
But despite old feuds being addressed, a lot of unresolved drama still lingers because all of the women view business decisions very differently.
“It’s always them three against me, and I feel like I’m always made to be the villain. It’s really irritating and stressful.”
Xscape: Still Kickin’ It airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m ET on Bravo!
