Brittany Cartwright Says Jax Taylor Left Her With a $10K Monthly Mortgage After Years of Unpaid Taxes!
Brittany Cartwright is opening up about the financial fallout of her split from Jax Taylor—and the toll it’s taken on her credit, her living situation, and her patience.
On a recent episode of The Valley: After Show, the Vanderpump Rules alum, 35, shared that her estranged husband’s years of unpaid taxes led to a staggering increase in their monthly mortgage—from $8,000 to $18,000. The financial strain, she says, stems from Jax’s refusal to pay bills after she moved out of their marital home in January 2024.
“I moved out January 24th of 2024, and he stopped paying [our mortgage] in February,” Brittany revealed. “I’ll never forgive him … Because of his ego and everything, [he said,] ‘I’m not moving out. This is my house.’ And then he just completely stopped paying all the bills. And then was yelling at me, saying, ‘You don’t pay the bills here.’”
Rather than battle for the home, Brittany says she chose to shield their son from the conflict—spending over $100,000 in rental/airbnb fees to live elsewhere while the mortgage went unpaid. Jax later claimed he “didn’t care” to pay the bills at the time, though he wrote a $100,000 check to make up for it.
In her own words, Brittany also linked the mortgage issue to Jax’s ongoing tax troubles. “He did the same thing with his taxes for years. He didn’t pay. He just figures it’s just going to go away,” she said. “My mortgage used to be around $8,000. I pay $18,000 now because of his taxes.”
She went on to suggest that money—and shifting roles in their relationship—created tension. “I was doing a bunch of commercials, a bunch of different brand deals, and different things like that. And so I was definitely bringing in a lot more money, and I don’t think he liked that because he was always used to being the breadwinner,” said Brittany.
“He paid the mortgage, and I paid everything else … I just think that as a father, you should contribute. He gave me $3,000 in all of 2024 … And still to this day, he’s maybe given me [$8,000] total in 2024 and 2025.”
Jax, 44, has acknowledged his tax issues publicly. “My taxes weren’t paid in six years. You can sit there and say, ‘Why didn’t you pay it?’ Well, I didn’t have the money to pay it, so I just kind of let it ride,” he admitted. “People make mistakes with taxes every single day. I learned my lesson, had to remortgage, and here we are. But I fixed it and I made it clean, and now we’re good.”
He also spoke about signing a lease just 17 days into rehab, claiming he did so on the advice of his therapist.
“I thought, ‘What was I doing making Brittany jump from Airbnb to Airbnb with my son,’” said Jax. “Let’s not [forget], she was living in mansions … It was not like she was living in a little shack.”
Explaining his decision to move out, Jax added, “Where the hell was I gonna go? So I was talking to my real estate agent, and I said, ‘Listen … there’s a new brand new building that just opened up … Tom [Schwartz] was there. This is right at my price range. I think Brittany will really appreciate the fact that I’m standing up, being a man, leaving the home.’ It totally backfired on me.”
The Valley airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.
