Karen Huger Fires Lawyers in Move to Delay DUI Sentencing and Avoid Accountability
Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger has fired her legal team in a desperate attempt to delay her DUI sentencing and avoid facing the consequences of her actions.
Karen Huger has been granted a postponement in her DUI case sentencing, after being found guilty of DUI and DWI charges in December. The 61-year-old reality TV personality was convicted following a March 2024 incident in which she crashed her Maserati into a pole in Montgomery County, Maryland. Karen was originally set to be sentenced on January 29, but with her request for a delay, the judge has now extended the deadline until February 26.
Legal Team Pushes for More Time
After her conviction, Karen made the decision to part ways with her former legal representation and hire new attorneys, David A. Martella and Barry Helfand. In court filings obtained by In Touch, Karen’s team explained that she is currently enrolled in a specialized out-of-state rehabilitation program that limits her ability to communicate with her lawyers. They emphasized the need for additional time to properly review the case and provide the court with an “meaningful and useful memorandum.”
“We respectfully ask for additional time,” the motion read, stressing that more time would allow them to better prepare for the next phase of the case.
Denied Motion to Block Key Evidence
Karen’s legal battles took a significant turn when her motion to block crucial evidence was rejected. Prior to trial, she sought to suppress bodycam footage and statements made by police during her arrest, arguing that her rights were violated. Karen claimed that an officer detained her without reading her Miranda rights and that the interrogation was improper.
However, prosecutors argued that her statements were “free and voluntary,” and the judge ultimately sided with the prosecution, allowing the bodycam footage to be used in court.
Arrest Footage Shows Huger Struggling
Released police footage from the crash scene showed Karen visibly struggling with her balance and slurring her words after the incident. The video, taken by first responders, captured the reality star being examined by an EMT, who reported that Karen was “swaying on her feet” and “verbally lashed out” at paramedics. Karen also refused treatment at the scene.
Her husband, Raymond, appeared shortly after the crash, attempting to shield his wife from further questioning by police. When officers inquired about the accident, Karen initially avoided providing details, but Raymond stepped in, telling the officers that she had only consumed “a couple of beers.”
The ‘I’m Lit!’ Moment That Went Viral
The arrest took another dramatic turn when footage emerged from Karen’s processing at the police station. In the clip, the RHOP star can be seen stumbling out of the police cruiser and loudly declaring, “I’m lit!” The officer responds, “You are lit.” The video quickly went viral, with fans expressing a mix of concern and shock over her condition. One fan wrote, “I hate this for Karen, but she, she needs help. She is stone drunk.” Another commented, “Not The Grand Dame!!!,” clearly surprised by the sight of the normally composed reality star in such a vulnerable state.
Despite the viral footage, Karen’s legal team has maintained that she was not intoxicated but rather “emotionally distressed” at the time of the crash. They continue to dispute the claims of her intoxication.
Huger Responds to Her Guilty Verdict
Following her conviction on multiple charges, including DUI and DWI, Karen’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, issued a statement expressing disappointment with the jury’s decision, though he confirmed that they respected it. “Although we are disappointed in the jury’s verdict, we, of course, respect their decision and appreciate their time hearing our case,” Bolden said. “We continue to reserve Mrs. Huger’s right to an appeal and intend to fully pursue justice on her behalf.”
In addition to the DUI charges, Karen also faced counts of driving with a suspended registration, failing to control her vehicle’s speed, and driving at an imprudent speed on the highway.
What’s Next for Karen Huger?
Despite the guilty verdict, Karen’s legal team is preparing for the next steps in her case, and the approved postponement in her sentencing allows them more time to prepare. As her legal team works on mounting an appeal, the reality star’s legal journey is far from over.
