A medical expert has raised concerns regarding the announcement from Kate Middleton about her undergoing cancer treatment, highlighting a specific aspect that he believes does not align with standard medical practices.
Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at The George Washington University, shared his insights during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN on March 22.
Dr. Reiner expressed skepticism over the claim that the cancer diagnosis came as a result following major surgery, questioning the sequence of events as described.
Dr. Reiner explained:
“When people undergo extensive surgery, they don’t go in typically for any more quote ‘exploratory surgery’, all these operations are preceded by extensive imaging like CAT scans and MRIs. So the surgical team would have a very good understanding of what was likely to be the problem and that would be confirmed by pathology.”
He further elaborated that tissue samples removed during surgery are immediately sent for pathological analysis, often while the surgery is still underway, to determine the presence of cancer and guide the surgical approach accordingly.
According to Dr. Reiner, “So, it’s very likely that the surgical team knew or had a good sense of what this was going to be prior to surgery, and that was confirmed at the time of pathologic testing during the operation. So this is something that would have at least been suspected before and confirmed during the operation.”
Dr. Reiner’s critique introduces a significant question mark over the narrative that the cancer was only identified post-surgery, suggesting that any signs of cancer would likely have been detected and assessed through pre-surgical diagnostics and confirmed during the procedure itself.

In a statement released through a pre-recorded video on March 22, the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, shared details about her recent health challenges.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” she disclosed.
This announcement provided insight into the initial assessment of her condition as benign, the subsequent discovery of cancer through post-operative testing, and her current treatment protocol.
Following the Princess of Wales’ candid disclosure about her cancer diagnosis and treatment, King Charles expressed his admiration and support for Kate’s bravery. Buckingham Palace released a statement saying,
“His Majesty is so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did. Following their time in hospital together, His Majesty has remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.”
The statement continued, “Both Their Majesties will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time.” This show of solidarity comes amid the King’s own health challenges, as he too is undergoing treatment for cancer, having ascended the throne 18 months prior.
Camilla, the Queen Consort, shared an update on the King’s condition, stating he was “doing very well.” Despite his health issues, King Charles has been actively fulfilling his responsibilities as head of state from within the palace, engaging in audiences and Privy Council meetings. However, he has had to postpone all public engagements since starting his cancer treatment in February. His diagnosis came unexpectedly after a hospital stay for a procedure related to an enlarged prostate, revealing a different, unspecified type of cancer.
