Dave Chappelle Calls Out the Transgender Community in new Netflix Show

Dave Chappelle fired off a fresh set of zingers about trans people in his new Netflix special, despite a past promise to not speak on the subject. 

Chappelle started his seventh special for the streaming service, titled “The Dreamer,” by reflecting back on his road to stardom. He interrupted the nostalgic walk down memory lane to tell an anecdote about meeting one of his comedic idols. 

“I wanted to meet Jim Carrey [who was method acting], but I had to pretend this n—a was Andy Kaufman. All afternoon,” he recalled.

He continued — “I could look at him and I could see that he was Jim Carrey.”

The comedian added — “Anyway, I say all that to say: That’s how trans people make me feel.”

He told audience members — “If you guys came here to this show tonight thinking that I’m going to make fun of those people again, you’ve come to the wrong show.”

Chappelle added — “I’m not f—king with those people anymore. It wasn’t worth the trouble. I ain’t saying s—t about them.”

“Maybe three or four times tonight, but that’s it,” he said. “I’m tired of talking about them.”

The funnyman went on to say that he was backing off his commentary because “people acted like [he] needed them to be funny.”

“Well, that’s ridiculous,” he quipped. “I don’t need you. I got a whole new angle coming.”

Chappelle continued—“You guys will never see this s—t coming. I ain’t doing trans jokes no more.”

He proudly declared that he would be moving on to the handicapped community because “they’re not as organized as the gays.”

He noted—“And I love punching down.”

The “Chappelle’s Show” alum switched back to the hot button topic, explaining that he tried to make amends with the transgender community. 

He commented — “I wrote a play. I did. ‘Cause I know that gays love plays.”

He described the play as “moving,” adding—“It’s about a black transgender woman whose pronoun is sadly n—a. It’s a tear-jerker.”

“At the end of the play, she dies of loneliness cause white liberals don’t know how to speak to her. It’s sad.”

He also joked that he planned to identify as a female if he ever landed behind bars. 

“Send me to a woman’s jail. As soon I get in there, you know what I’mma be doing,” he said.

He imagined demanding—“‘I’m a girl, just like you, bitch. Come here and suck this girl d—k I got.’ ‘Don’t make me explain myself. I’m a girl.’” 

The actor recalled being attacked while appearing at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022, by a person with a fake gun that contained a real knife. He added that the knife “identified as a gun” and that he “triggered” the attacker by mentioning the LGBTQIA+ community. He joked that he “could have been raped” as he later discovered that the assailant was bisexual. 

 

Chappelle’s special, which sparked blowback from the LGBTQIA+ community, was not his first experience with angry backlash. Netflix employees walked out of work in protest over his offensive comments featured in 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer.”
