Kody Brown Calls His Failure at Polygamy a “Shakespearean Love Story Turned Tragedy”

Kody Brown, the 54-year-old star of Sister Wives, recently shared his thoughts about the dramatic changes in his life following the end of three of his four polygamous marriages.

Reflecting on these significant shifts, Kody Brown expressed uncertainty about his future, acknowledging that his difficulty in moving forward might stem from not having fully let go of his past. “I’m struggling to see what the future holds, maybe because I just haven’t let go enough of the past,” he told PEOPLE.

The process of unraveling began in November 2021 when Christine Brown, Kody’s wife of nearly 26 years, announced her departure from the family. This was followed by Janelle Brown and then Meri Brown, Kody’s second and first wives, respectively, also confirming the end of their relationships with him within the following two months. During this time, only his fourth wife, Robyn Brown, remained with him, transitioning into what became effectively a monogamous marriage.

Kody shared his deep sense of loss over these events, noting the heartbreak he felt as his once cherished polygamous lifestyle crumbled. He lamented, “In the end, it felt like everybody else was unhappy because I felt like I was lodging all the complaints, that it just made me cynical. I loved [our situation]. It just seemed like not everybody else did.”

His vision for his family was one of unity and overcoming challenges together, a dream that he now sees as unfulfilled. “I didn’t want to be the guy that has this family that I struggle with until I’m dead. Then they all get along just great after I’m gone. I don’t understand why we can’t transcend this now. It broke my heart that we couldn’t transcend our differences. It’s part of life. I loved the life we have, and I hope I love the life that I’ll get,” he expressed.

Kody poignantly described the situation as “a Shakespearean love story that’s a tragedy,” saying, “It’s just we loved and we lost.”

Despite these trials, Kody remains hopeful. He fondly recalls the life they shared as a large family, referring to it as a great team experience navigating the challenges of life. This reflection seems to rekindle his optimism as he looks back at the past with fondness. “There’s my optimism. It’s back. I’m seeing my past again and saying, ‘It was lovely.’ It’s changed now,” he remarked.

Kody concluded with a forward-looking perspective, expressing a hope for mutual love and the ability for each member of the family to move on with their lives. “Maybe I’ll find that optimism for the future. In the end, hopefully we just love each other and let each other move on,” he said.
