Who Will Get Custody of Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell’s Daughters After Her Death

Mama June’s daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, who also appeared on the family’s TLC reality series, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, tragically passed away from stage 4 adrenal cancer on December 9, 2023. Her death has raised questions about the custody of her two daughters, Kaitlyn and Kylee.

Kaitlyn Elizabeth Shannon, born on July 26, 2012, was Anna’s eldest daughter and was 11 years old at the time of her mother’s passing. Anna had never publicly disclosed the identity of Kaitlyn’s father.

Kylee Madison Cardwell, born on December 9, 2015, celebrated her 8th birthday on the same day her mother passed away. Kylee’s father is Michael Cardwell, Anna’s ex-husband, to whom she was married from 2014 to 2017.

Before her untimely death, Anna had the opportunity to witness Kaitlyn graduate from elementary school and Kylee complete the first grade in May 2023. Anna proudly shared her joy on Facebook, expressing her pride in her daughters’ accomplishments.

Following Anna’s passing, reports emerged that Kaitlyn was taken in by her grandmother, Mama June. It is suggested that Mama June intends to become Kaitlyn’s legal guardian, as they share a close bond.

As for Kylee, it is reported that she is living with her father, Michael Cardwell. This arrangement appears to have been put in place after Anna was diagnosed with cancer in January 2023.

Eldridge Toney, whom Anna married before her death, has expressed his intention to remain involved in the lives of both girls.

In a recent development, Michael filed a lawsuit against Mama June for custody of Kaitlyn on December 17, 2023. In his legal filing, he asserted that he had played a significant and consistent role in Kaitlyn’s life, including providing for her education and developing a strong bond with her. Michael also claimed that Kaitlyn’s biological father was a man named, Caleb Clark, who had not supported Anna or Kaitlyn.

Michael argued that Anna’s complicated relationship with Mama June made her an unsuitable guardian for Kaitlyn, as Anna had spent a considerable portion of her life under her maternal grandmother’s care.

Mama June, in response to the lawsuit, claimed that she had not received any legal papers but pledged to address the matter in court. She asserted that it was Anna’s desire for Kaitlyn to remain with her and her husband, Justin Stroud. Mama June questioned the necessity of putting the girls through a custody battle, given that they had already lost their mother.

Anna’s battle with stage 4 adrenal cancer began in January 2023. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and fighting the disease for over 10 months, she ultimately succumbed to it.

Anna passed away peacefully at Mama June’s home, surrounded by her loved ones, including Kaitlyn, Kylee, Mama June, Eldridge, and Anna’s sisters. Mama June shared the heartbreaking news of Anna’s passing with fans, expressing gratitude for the support and prayers during this difficult time.
