Drew Barrymore’s Shocking Confession: “I Wish My Mother Was Dead”
Drew Barrymore confessed that she “cannot wait” for the passing of her mother, Jaid Barrymore, in an interview with New York magazine.
The television host opened up about her troubled childhood with her mom, admitting that she was jealous of friends who had already lost their parents.
“All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not. And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury.’ But I cannot wait,” Drew told the mag.
She continued — “I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow. I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy. But I have to f–king grow in spite of her being on this planet.”
The actress admitted that she felt badly for making the harsh remarks, later in the interview.
“I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel good,” the ET actress said. “I do care. I’ll never not care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up.”
The 48-year-old has been candid in past interviews about her tumultuous upbringing with her mother. Drew previously revealed that she was taken to Hollywood parties, including Studio 54, as a child, with her mother/manager.
Drew had been admitted to rehab for drugs and alcohol by the age of 12 and her mother placed her in a California psychiatric ward, when she was only 13.
“I think she created a monster, and she didn’t know what to do with the monster,” Drew explained to Howard Stern, during a 2021 interview.
Drew was emancipated from her parents when she was 14 years old.
The actress went on to forgive her father, John David Barrymore, before his 2004 death, but has yet to fully make peace with her mother.
Drew clarified during the interview that she didn’t “blame” Jaid for the challenges she’s faced in her life.
“I choose very consciously not to see my life as things that have been done to me,” she said. “I want to see it as the things I did and chose to do. I’m not attracted to people who lay blame on others. I don’t find it sexy.”
Drew shares two daughters with ex-husband, Will Kopelman.
Back in December, Drew noted that she “will always support” her mother in an interview with PEOPLE.
“I can’t turn my back on the person who gave me my life,” Drew told the outlet. “I can’t do it. It would hurt me so much. I would find it so cruel. But there are times where I’ve realized that our chemistry and behavior will drum up a feeling in me where I have to say, ‘OK, I need a break again.’”
