Prince Harry Feared Meghan Markle Would Leave Him
Prince Harry once feared that Meghan Markle would walk away from their relationship, after a particularly nasty argument. Harry sat down with Dr. Gabor Maté on Saturday to discuss the incident, which he detailed in his recently released memoir, Spare.
Prince Harry revealed that he later realized that “he needed” Meghan to push him into understanding that he might lose her.
“I really needed that,” he said. “I needed that pushback” and the thought of “losing her.”
An excerpt of the book that described the blowout fight.
“Maybe the wine went to my head. Maybe the weeks of battling the press had worn me down. For some reason, when the conversation took an unexpected turn, I became touchy,” the Duke of Sussex revealed in his first memoir. “Then angry. Disproportionately, sloppily angry.”
Harry claimed that the “Suits” actress said something that he “took the wrong way” due to a culture clash and a language barrier.
“I was also just over-sensitive that night. I thought: ‘Why’s she having a go at me?’ I snapped at her, spoke to her harshly [and] cruelly,” Harry wrote about Meghan. “As the words left my mouth, I could feel everything in the room come to a stop. The gravy stopped bubbling, the molecules of air stopped orbiting. Even Nina Simone seemed to pause.”
The California-based couple wed in May 2018. They share two children, son, Archie, and 20-month-old daughter, Lilibet. Harry and Meghan stepped back from their senior working royal positions in 2020.
Prince Harry recalled that his wife exited the room and did not come back for a “full 15 minutes” before he found her in their bedroom.
“She was calm, but said in a quiet, level tone that she would never stand for being spoken to like that. I nodded. She wanted to know where it came from,” Harry wrote in his book. “I don’t know. [She asked,] ’Where did you ever hear a man speak like that to a woman? Did you overhear adults speak that way when you were growing up?’ I cleared my throat, looked away [and responded], ‘Yes.’”
Harry shared that she told him that she would not “tolerate” a life or parenting partner who would behave that way.
“She wasn’t going to raise children in an atmosphere of anger or disrespect. She laid it all out, super-clear,” Harry wrote.
Prince Harry clarified in the book that they both “knew” that his eruption did not stem from their conversation.
The royal noted during his Saturday interview that Meghan’s calm approach provided a “lightbulb moment.”
He said — “An understanding of how these things manifest themselves and how we are so much a product of our upbringing.”
Harry went on to gush over his wife, calling Meghan an “exceptional human being.” He added that the actress helped him to realize that personal change was possible.
He said — “Yes, my partner is an exceptional human being and I’m eternally grateful for the wisdom and the space that she’s been able to give to me.”
