Jazz Jennings Caught ‘Off Guard’ During First Date in Four Years

Jazz Jennings goes on her first date in four years on Tuesday’s episode of I Am Jazz. The 22-year-old transgender activist goes on a double date in a preview clip of the upcoming episode. 

Jazz goes out with a man named Dayron, her brother, Sander, and his “lady friend,” on a double date that includes a private dance lesson at a bar. A blonde instructor gives a demonstration and Dayron encourages Jazz to watch and try out the move with him. 

“Oh, oh! OK!” Jazz says after watching the instructor and touching her flower crown. “I’m leaving my crown on. This crown is staying on.”

Dayron grabs Jazz’s arm and tries to pull her onto the dance floor, telling his date, “C’mon, c’mon!”

Jazz admits that she felt awkward in the moment, in a confessional interview. 

She says — “I’m getting a little uncomfortable because Maria does her hair flip, and Dayron is kind of like ‘Jazz, you do it! You do it!'” 

Dayron tells Jazz that he doesn’t understand her nervousness after encouraging her to dance in the center of the dance floor. The TLC personality begins to overthink the situation and even worries that she’s “projecting negative emotions” on her first date in years.

“Hearing Dayron say I seem nervous kind of takes me off guard,” she tells cameras. “Because now, I just feel uncomfortable.”

Jazz split from her last boyfriend, Ahmir Steward, in April 2019. The reality star is now back in the dating game after taking an apparent break.  

Jazz spoke to PEOPLE ahead of the current season and revealed that one main storyline explores her “love life, and where I’m going with that, and do I, or do I not find love?”

“All those questions will be answered,” she teased.

Jazz knows that she will face hurdles as she enters the dating scene as a transgender person. 

“I wish people understood that dating as a trans person is really hard because transgender people are immediately judged and ostracized for who they are,” she said.

The Harvard student shared her hope that people would be more “empathetic, and accepting, and loving” when it comes to understanding that she isn’t solely defined as a transgender woman. 

“I wish people could be like, ‘You know what? I don’t care that you’re transgender. You’re just a woman to me. You’re beautiful. And I see that in you,'” she said. “And yeah, one of the people that I date on the show, they express that, that they accept me for being a woman.”

I Am Jazz airs Tuesdays at 10 pm ET on TLC.
