Ashley Darby Addresses Colorism Allegations Amid Backlash
Ashley Darby is responding to Candiace Dillard Bassett accusing her of colorism.
The Real Housewives of Potomac co-stars have a long history of nasty feuding. Previously, Candiace has come for Ashley’s “large forehead,” called her the racist term, “bed wench,” and body-shamed her after she gave birth to her first child. Candiace referred to Ashley’s post-baby body as “wide” multiple times, despite Ashley making it clear that those remarks were hurtful.
Earlier in Season 7, Ashley Darby and Candiace Dillard seemingly buried their past beef, however, things took a turn when Ashley claimed that Candiace’s husband, Chris Bassett, had been messaging and flirting with her friends.
After the episode aired, Candiace took aim at Ashley’s husband, Michael Darby, on Twitter.
“I would also like to record to reflect that I received the text about forehead’s rapey ass husband ON camera. The camera was on me while I was preparing to walk out of my room and my friend sent me the text that I later showed her. If I had received the text off-camera, cont’d…” she tweeted. “I would have approached her off camera. #RHOP”
Interestingly enough, Candiace has stated that when it comes to viewers criticizing her actions, she believes she receives more criticism than Ashley, due to colorism. And some RHOP fans agreed with Candiace and expressed their criticism on social media.
“Ashley is a colorist and liar. She has called Wendy and Candaice aggressive routinely and lied on them.” One person wrote.
Someone else commented, “Ashley is a colorist idc wtf she put out online defending the narrative.”
Another fan tweeted, “The only person that can be considered a colorist on the show is Ashley, because the language she used towards the cast until Wendy checked her durinf her 1st reunion. Ashley straightened up after that. The fans are the true colorists.”
“I don’t understand how Robin Gisele and Ashley can’t see that optically they look like colorist bullies.” A critic stated.
Someone else noted, “ASHLEY IS COLORIST but you can’t see it when you’re privileged. Ashley sat there silent along with Mia and Gizelle while Robyn is going off on Wendy. Karen was the only one who spoke up. That’s the difference. Wendy was inquiring about the allegations against Candiace.”
However, some viewers don’t view Ashley’s comments on the show towards the two dark-skinned women — Candiace Dillard and Wendy Osefo as colorist.
One fan pointed out, “I don’t really get colorist from Ashley as much as I get it from the older women on the cast. Her history shows she is just generally messy and will do almost anything for some coins.”
Another stated, “I’m all for calling people out on their mess but I think colorist is a stretch .. i think the proper term for ashley is messy af.”
Someone else simply noted, “I’ve never got colorist vibes from Ashley …after that episode when she tried to meet her yt daddy I kinda felt bad for he.”
Ashley Darby took to Instagram to address the colorism accusations.
The mom of two explains she’s not a colorist because she’s argued with everyone on the cast, whom have a broad range of complexions. Press play below to watch.
