Sister Wives: Kody Brown Declares He’s NOT Divorced From Christine

Sister Wives stars  Christine Brown and Kody Brown may have separated but according to Kody, they’re not divorced. 

During the November 6 episode, the term “divorced,” has Kody freaking out because according to him, he and Christine are not divorced without the approval from the church.

Kody, Meri Brown, Robyn Brown and Janelle Brown, all gather Christine’s house for a family meeting. During the sit down, Kody reveals that his daughter, Truely, told him that Christine considers them divorced.

“I was sitting there talking with Truely and she’s like, ‘Well, you and Mom are divorced,'” Kody recalls. “It was a little bit news to me.”

Kody is pissed off by the label and says, “We never made an official agreement. We never signed a paper. We never agreed. We never went to our church leaders and said, ‘Hey, we’re divorced’ or ‘We want a divorce.'”

Naturally, Robyn supports Kody and says the church would need to approve the divorce.

“Usually our church would say you’re divorced, you have to go ask for a divorce. You have to get paperwork, you have to get approval. You have to approve that the marriage is broken,” she says.

Janelle feels that Christine’s actions invalidates their religious beliefs.

“Christine saying ‘I’m divorced’ is sort of invalidating our beliefs. We’re spiritually married to Kody by our church,” Janelle says.

Janelle explains church procedures regarding separation involves  Christine and Kody working on their relationship further before they can split.

“If we want a divorce, then we have to go get their approval. Usually, they require counseling. Usually, they require lots and lots of meetings. Technically, from my understanding, until Christine is physical with another man, she’s not divorced. But I don’t know,” Janelle says.

Christine however has a completely different perspective on divorce. In her eyes, they’re divorce because they never legally got married. Also, she no longer practices the beliefs of their AUB church, so approval from the institution is not required.

“Since I don’t have any legal contract that binds me with Kody, there was no legal process that we had to go through,” Christine explains. “Neither of us are a part of that religion anymore. So, me just saying I’m divorced? I don’t see the problem in that at all.”

Kody and his three remaining wives — Meri, Janelle and Robyn belong to the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB) — which is a sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) or the Mormon religion that allows followers to practice polygamy.

Kody was first legally married to Meri, then divorced in 2014, so he could legally wed Robyn to adopt her children from a previous relationship. His other marriages are considered “spiritual unions.”

Christine announced she was done with Kody in November 2021 after more than 25 years together. 

“Kody and I are divorced,” Christine said during an episode of the TLC reality show. “We’re completely separate. We’re just gonna be friends, eventually. I just realized I had to make a decision for my heart, and my heart was done being broken. And it felt, well, freeing.”

Kody offers his views on the split. “Christine’s moved; she’s left. We are no longer married,” he explains. “I love her, and I don’t know what to do ‘cause I’ve got the grief but I’m still angry. I’ll take the grief right now for a little while just to be out of the anger phase, and then [I’m] just moving on. [I] just [want to] have a good life and find happiness.”
