‘Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s’ Andre Montgomery Jr’s Killer Sentenced to 32 Years in Prison!

The family of deceased “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” star, Andre Montgomery Jr., confronted his killer in court last week and spoke out about their loss. Travell Anthony Hill was sentenced to 32 years in prison on two murder-for-hire charges by U.S. District Judge John Ross, on Thursday.

Montgomery was gunned down on March 14, 2016. Hill pleaded guilty in June to plotting with James “Tim” Norman, Montgomery’s uncle, to kill the 21-year-old. 

In September, Norman was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, murder-for-hire, and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in connection to the killing. Norman orchestrated the murder with the help of three co-defendants, Hill, Terica Ellis, and Waiel “Wally” Rebhi Yaghnam, after taking out a $450k life insurance policy on Montgomery.

The indictment alleged that Hill was recorded discussing the murder with his brother during phone calls from jail. Norman reportedly paid Hill $5,000 to carry out the homicide. Federal documents revealed that Ellis deposited more than $9k in cash into several bank accounts in the days following the murder.

Norman and his nephew both appeared as cast members on Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s, which debuted on OWN in October 2011 and ended in 2018. The show starred Norman’s mother, Robbie Montgomery, a once-famous singer and grandmother to Montgomery.

 

Montgomery’s sister, Kalyn Griggs, spoke out in court asking Hill, “How can you sleep?” and “Was the $5,000 worth it?”

Darren Griggs, Montgomery’s brother, told the court—“We are not whole, and we never will be again. Andre had so much life left to live.”

Hill addressed the court, apologizing to Montgomery’s family and asking the judge for leniency. He stated that he did not carry out the murder for money, but to “protect myself.” He said that two of his brothers were shot and killed the same year he gunned down Montgomery. He stated that he has a 1-year-old son he’d never met, due to his incarceration. 

“I’ve been dead inside since the day of the murder,” Hill said. “I apologize to everyone in court.”

Prosecutors, Angie Danis and Gwendolyn Carroll, and Hill’s defense attorney, Peter Cohen, requested a 30-year sentence, despite the life-in-prison recommendation. They asked the judge to consider the fact that Hill had cooperated with the authorities. Judge Ross noted that Hill’s statements about his brothers’ shooting deaths only made his actions more disturbing.

“You understood the pain that those things cause, yet you did that to Andre,” he said, adding that Hill acted in an “incredibly cold and callous manner.”

“The fact that his life meant so little to you is hard to understand,” Ross said.
