Taylor Hale Makes ‘Big Brother’ History as First Black Woman Winner!

Taylor Hale made reality TV history Sunday when she came out on top on the Season 24 finale of reality series, Big Brother. Taylor was the first black woman to win the competition. 

Monte Taylor won the final Head of Household competition and chose Taylor to sit alongside him in the final two spots. Lots of fans dubbed Taylor’s passionate speech as the “best speech in Big Brother history.”

“I have overcome so much in this game and I have come to understand that I am not a shield. I am a sword,” Taylor declared to the jury members. “I am not a victim. I am a victor. If there is one word that is going to describe the entire season, it is resiliency. If you were to ask yourself who the most resilient person of this season has been, it is me.”

“We can have the same Big Brother wins that we’ve had in the past, but I am challenging you jury members,” she continued. “I’m challenging all of you to decide what type of winner you want to have this year? Do we want the same thing, where we see evictions and comp wins be the path to success? Or do we want a winner where we choose resiliency, we choose persistence as a reason to win this game. I have never given up on myself and I refuse to do it tonight when I’m sitting next to such a strong competitor. Jury members, I am challenging you to make the hard decision and change the course of the game and choose progress for the course of this game. I can be with the winner of this season, and I promise you will not do it in vain if you choose me tonight.”

The two final houseguests were a black man and a black woman for the first time in the history of the long running series. Taylor also won “America’s Favorite Houseguest,” marking the first time for any winner of the show. Taylor raked in a massive $800k cash prize for her victory.  

Taylor’s historic win came after fellow contestant, Kyle Capener, was booted from the house after engaging in racist gameplay on the show. Production highlighted Kyle’s idea to form an alliance against the non-white contestants amid an assumption that they had already done the same to him. 

Kyle later spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his words and actions on the CBS series.

He told the outlet—“So mid-game, I definitely made some generalized thoughts and comments that had no foundation at all, and I deeply regret. They never should have brought up in Big Brothe 24. And I hate that I’m the person that has to have that self-reflection time. I talked with everyone in the house, and they’ve all been so open and so willing to help me through this process and help me see it from their perspective, and share experiences that have been eye-opening to me. And I now own it moving forward after the game. It’s up to me to continue that process, continue finding resources, and having those conversations moving forward.”
