Welcome to Plathville’s Kim Plath’s Top Offenses Toward Family Members Revealed!

Welcome to Plathville star, Kim Plath, has few fans, in fact, many viewers see the TLC mom as a cold-hearted, controlling hypocrite. 

Season 4 of the reality series followed the large family in the wake of Kim’s decision to separate from husband, Barry Plath, after a 24-year marriage.

Kim sheltered her children to keep them from developing patterns from her own past lifestyle, involving drugs, sex, and alcohol use. However, Kim’s kids were often left feeling unloved or invalidated under her watchful eye. The show featured Kim’s over-the-top reactions to her kids’ behaviors, which often did not sit well with viewers.

Kim sparked controversy with fans when she seemingly overreacted to her daughter, Lydia, using the family cellphone to flirt with a boy. Lydia was transparent about the relationship but Kim made her daughter feel guilty, as she read through the text messages. She also forced Lydia to apologize for her actions. 

Kim’s contentious relationship with her daughter-in-law, Olivia, was also highlighted in the TLC series. Fans were puzzled about what was behind the beef, but Kim gave the audience a hint when she implied that her son’s wife was being influenced by “evil spirits” living in her heart. Kim was asked about the comment but blamed her reaction on a religion that supposedly taught that all negative emotions were rooted in satanic influences. She did not cop to being in the wrong and did not apologize for her dark analysis. 

Kim also went against the wishes of her daughter, Moriah, when she decided to attend a concert where Moriah was singing and Olivia was playing guitar. Kim even used a friend’s car to stay under the radar. She tried to remain hidden during the concert, but her son, Ethan, spotted her instantly, heightening family tensions.  

Kim opened up to her son, Micah, about being abused as a child after he questioned his upbringing—which involved homeschooling and no technology amid an isolated home life, in a July episode. 

Micah and Kim met up for drinks, where the 21-year-old and his mother discussed why she chose to end her marriage. 

He added—“What made you raise us the way that you did?” 

“It’s uncomfortable,” Kim said. “There are several things, but one thing that is kind of big in terms of how it affected me is when I was 4 and 5, my mom, who was a single parent and doing the best that she could, hired a babysitter to watch me. And he was a teenage boy. And I can just say that when you have little girls, the last thing you want is for them to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and have something happen.”

“That is why I always knew where they were, what they were doing, who they were with, whatever,” she explained. “That played a very large part in me being protective — maybe overprotective — but to me, the risk of not being overprotective enough is so great that I’d rather err on the side of overprotecting than under and have something like that happen.”

“It hurts hearing this, but I’m glad she’s telling me,” Micah said in a confessional spot. ”It gives me more of an understanding of who she is as a person and the way she raised us, the rules she had, and the walls she had built. It’s like a penny-drop moment. As soon as she told me, all the pieces fit together.”
