Officials Confirm Hantavirus and Heart Disease as Causes of Death

On Friday, the Santa Fe Medical Examiner released their findings, confirming that Hackman, 95, passed away from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with advanced Alzheimer’s disease listed as a significant contributing factor. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, succumbed to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome — a rare but deadly illness transmitted through contact with infected rodents.

Hackman tested negative for hantavirus, ruling out any possibility that he had contracted the illness.

Timeline of Deaths

Dr. Heather Jarrell, speaking at a press conference, revealed that Hackman was “in very poor health” leading up to his passing. She estimated that he likely died on February 17, approximately a week after Arakawa’s death.

“Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that Mrs. Hackman passed away first, with Feb. 11 being the last time that she was known to be alive,” Jarrell stated.

Jarrell also noted that there was evidence Hackman had not eaten for several days before his death, further indicating the challenges he may have faced in his final days.

The Impact of Alzheimer’s on Hackman’s Final Days

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza weighed in on the tragic timeline, suggesting that Hackman may not have been aware that his wife had passed away due to his advanced Alzheimer’s disease.

“I would assume that that is the case, given his Alzheimer’s status, that Mr. Hackman was able to live on his own and survive,” Mendoza said.

Investigation Into the Death of the Couple’s Dog

In addition to the couple, their dog was also found deceased inside their home. Officials confirmed that the dog was in a crate at the time, though further details remain unknown. A necropsy is pending to determine the cause of the animal’s death.

With the cause of death now confirmed, investigators believe the tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were the result of natural causes and illness, rather than any external foul play. The case remains a heartbreaking end to the Hollywood icon’s life.
