Maddie Brown is airing explosive family drama, revealing that her father, Sister Wives star Kody Brown, once admitted he doesn’t love her.

Maddie Brown Cuts Ties with Kody

Maddie Brown is not holding back when it comes to discussing her estranged relationship with her father, Sister Wives star Kody Brown.

On a recent episode of her podcast, The Authentic Society, Maddie candidly revealed why she no longer has any contact with her father — and why she has no interest in rekindling their relationship.

“I have no contact with some of my family, and it’s because of stuff that has happened,” Maddie explained. Specifically about Kody, she added, “He doesn’t have any respect for boundaries, and you have to play by his rules, and I just don’t care to do that.”

The root of their estrangement, Maddie said, stems from their clashing personalities and her unwillingness to sugarcoat her thoughts.

“I’m a straight shooter. You ask me a question, I’m going to tell you what I think. And my dad would get very angry when I would be like, ‘I don’t know why you’re surprised here,’” she explained. “He didn’t like a mirror being held up.”

Maddie shared an example of this dynamic, saying, “I’d say, ‘In my opinion, there’s a lot of anger,’ and he’d be like, ‘That’s not true.’ I’m like, ‘It is true. I know this firsthand.’ And there’s other people that are the same. They’d ask for my opinion, and I’d express my opinion, and they’d get angry.”

Her Children Don’t Know Their Grandfather

The estrangement extends beyond Maddie herself and affects her children as well. According to Maddie and her mother, Janelle Brown, Kody has not been present in their lives for years.

“Kody has not been there since Evie was born, and Evie is three and a half,” Janelle revealed during an episode of Sister Wives. “She didn’t just want him to drop in and be like, ‘Oh, I’m your grandpa!’ and them be like, ‘What? Who is this guy?’”

Speaking on the Somewhat Basic podcast in 2023, Maddie echoed this sentiment, saying that her children wouldn’t even recognize him.

Despite Maddie’s reasoning, Kody sees things differently. He has accused Maddie of intentionally keeping her children away from him.

“She is purposefully leaving me out of their lives to punish me for a crime I did not commit,” Kody said, adding, “I am only guilty of not falling madly in love with their mothers.”

Maddie has disputed this, recalling an instance where Kody allegedly told Janelle, “Dad said he didn’t love you,” which further strained their already fragile relationship.

Janelle’s Divorce Tied to Kody’s Pattern of Estrangement

Janelle Brown has since confirmed that Kody’s estrangement from their daughter Maddie played a significant role in her decision to divorce him. Speaking openly on Sister Wives, Janelle revealed how Kody’s strained relationships with his older children had become a troubling pattern.

“I can observe that Kody seems to have trouble relating to his older children, and he seems to dote on the younger children,” Janelle explained. “When my children were younger, it was very easy for him to be a father… because he was still kind of this important [figure]. His opinion mattered to them, his guidance mattered to them. And now, because they question a little bit, I think it might be harder for Kody to feel like he’s respected.”

For Janelle, this inability — or unwillingness — of Kody to repair his relationships with their children was a deal-breaker.

“The big spark for me was when his relationship broke down with my children, and he didn’t seem like he would move heaven and earth to fix it,” she shared. “And I thought, OK, that was what was really holding me here.”

While Kody reportedly expressed a desire to reconcile with Janelle, she made it clear where her priorities lie. “I don’t know how I would ever reconcile with him and have him not have a relationship with my kids,” Janelle stated. “No, I’m going to always choose my kids.”

A Fractured Family

Maddie’s estrangement and Janelle’s decision to divorce Kody highlight the growing rifts within the Brown family. Maddie has expressed frustration with fans offering unsolicited advice about forgiving her father.

“I always get messages from people who are like, ‘You should just forgive your dad and respect him,’” Maddie said. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t think you know what you’re talking about because your experience with your dad could be very different than my experience with my dad.’”

With both Janelle and Maddie turning away from Kody, it appears the Brown family dynamic is undergoing irreversible changes. As the fractures deepen, the once-united family continues to struggle with maintaining relationships amid years of unresolved issues.
