“He’s steady, which I think is good,” Mary shared while promoting a Van Leeuwen ice cream flavor, acknowledging the weight of the situation. “It’s a heavy topic. But for me—because it all just came at once on me and I didn’t expect it—I’m taking it day by day … [He’s] doing good.”

Close friend and castmate Angie Katsanevas stood by Mary’s side during the event and praised Robert Jr.’s kind nature. “In support of Robert Jr. and Mary, Elektra [Angie’s 13-year-old daughter] and I visited them, and he was so kind, engaging, and sweet to Elektra. He’s such a great kid,” Angie added.

Mary’s commitment to her son has been a priority, even if it means missing out on cast trips. During a recent RHOSLC couples’ trip to Palm Springs, Mary stayed behind to focus on supporting Robert Jr.

“I preferred missing the trip,” Mary admitted, explaining that her time is better spent being “attentive” to her son.

Currently, Robert Jr. lives at home with Mary and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr. While he hasn’t pursued college or employment yet, Mary joked, “I’ve got to kick him out of the nest.”

Robert Jr.’s substance abuse struggles have been ongoing for several years. In 2022, he was arrested for a DUI in Utah, where he admitted to taking oxycontin and Xanax before the incident, along with smoking marijuana.

In 2024, The U.S. Sun reported that Robert Jr. had spent time in rehab after testing positive for cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana.

Reflecting on her son’s journey, Mary admitted the experience has been a profound learning process. “It was an eye-opener for me,” she said. She also revealed the heartbreaking moments when Robert Jr. expressed that he “didn’t want to live.”

“I don’t have thoughts like that,” Mary explained. “I came to the realization: [drugs can] alter your thoughts and your brain, and they can make you go dark.”

While Robert Jr.’s journey to sobriety is far from over, Mary remains hopeful about his future. Season 5 of RHOSLC will document parts of their emotional experience, offering viewers a raw and honest look at the struggles of supporting a loved one through addiction.

For Mary, the priority is staying present and supportive as her son finds his way. “I’m taking it day by day,” she emphasized, determined to be there for Robert Jr. every step of the way.
