Kamala Harris’ loss to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election has sparked intense criticism from within the Democratic Party, especially among Black leaders in key swing states.

MediaTakeOut reached out to Democratic members in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin — all states where Black voter turnout was notably lower than expected. In Georgia and Pennsylvania, turnout was significantly weaker than it had been for Joe Biden, raising questions about Kamala Harris’ campaign strategy and its connection to Black communities.

Black Voter Turnout Falls Short in Key States

While Kamala still earned a strong share of the Black vote among those who turned out, the actual number of Black voters in crucial states like Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania was lower than anticipated. Black Democratic Party leaders in these swing states report frustration, saying that Kamala Harris and her team failed to resonate with Black voters on the ground, despite spending close to a billion dollars across these regions.

A Democratic Party leader in Michigan, speaking anonymously to MediaTakeOut, expressed disappointment with Kamala Harris’ campaign approach. “It was a mess. They were not doing what they needed to do to get Black people. All they were doing was paying celebrities and organizing big events. They thought that was all they needed to get Black votes,” the source shared.

Criticism Over Campaign Spending

The criticism centers on how Kamala Harris’ campaign allocated resources. Instead of directing funds toward grassroots mobilization, reports indicate the campaign spent tens of millions on celebrity appearances — expenses that some believe could have been better used to boost Black voter turnout. “The team was a bunch of unprofessional White out-of-towners and bougie Black people who didn’t know sh*t about Black people in Detroit,” the Michigan leader added, reflecting frustration over what many felt was a disconnect between campaign leadership and local Black communities.

Calls for Accountability from Democratic Leaders

Black leaders in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin echoed similar sentiments, describing Kamala Harris’ campaign as disconnected and out of touch. While these leaders have yet to publicly voice their concerns, sources suggest that some plan to speak out soon. The issue isn’t only being discussed among Black leaders; White Democratic Party members in Pennsylvania are also reportedly frustrated with the way the campaign unfolded.

As these frustrations build, MediaTakeOut, one of the largest Black news platforms, intends to continue investigating what went wrong for Kamala Harris’ campaign and why it struggled to galvanize the Black vote. For now, Black leaders are left grappling with the prospect of a Trump presidency, one they feel could have been avoided with a more engaged and targeted campaign strategy.
