Olympic Judges Revoke Jordan Chiles Bronze Medal and Give it To Romanian Gymnast
Jordan Chiles has officially been stripped of her bronze medal in the floor exercise from the Paris Olympics following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on August 10. The decision has led to the reallocation of the medal to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.
The CAS judge ruled in favor of a petition from Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, challenging Chiles’ initial bronze medal win. The petition argued that Chiles had been incorrectly awarded the third-place spot during the floor final on August 5.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the medal reallocation to Barbosu in a statement issued on August 11. “We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal,” the statement said.
The CAS ruling was passed to the IOC and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) to manage the redistribution of medals. Chiles, 23, had initially finished in fifth place based on the judges’ scoring. However, her coach, Cecile Landi of USA Gymnastics, successfully submitted an inquiry into the scoring, highlighting that Chiles’ difficulty score had been too low. This inquiry led to a score adjustment from 13.666 to 13.766, which placed Chiles in third place, ahead of Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea, who both scored 13.700.
The Romanian Olympic committee contested the decision a day later, leading to the CAS judge’s ruling that Landi’s inquiry had been submitted 4 seconds past the one-minute deadline specified in Article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Regulations. The ruling deemed the inquiry invalid.
The Romanian committee had requested that the IOC/FIG amend the final podium to include all three athletes in third place, but this request was not granted. Instead, the medal was reallocated solely to Barbosu.
In response to the decision, Chiles expressed her distress on social media with a series of heartbroken emojis and later announced her decision to step away from social media for her mental health. “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you,” she wrote.
Simone Biles, a close friend and teammate, showed her support for Chiles on Instagram Stories. She shared a photo of the two gymnasts with the caption: “Sending you so much love Jordan. Keep your chin up Olympic champ! We love you!”
USA Gymnastics also expressed their disappointment with the CAS ruling.
“We are devastated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling regarding women’s floor exercise,” the organization stated. “The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring.”
The ruling marks a significant development in the gymnastics world, impacting the final standings from the Paris Olympics and highlighting the complexities involved in the sport’s scoring and protest procedures.
