In a clip from Friday (July 26) night’s premiere episode, Kim opens up about the staggering amount of money she has invested in her relationship with Joey while he serves time in prison. According to Kim, she has poured approximately $15,000 into maintaining their connection, revealing just how much she has sacrificed financially for Joey.
Kim’s expenses include not only the cost of phone calls but also various other expenses related to Joey. In the clip, she discloses that their phone conversations alone cost her $200 per week. This figure seems particularly striking given that, according to the Prison Policy Initiative, the average cost of a 15-minute phone call for inmates in North Carolina, where Joey is incarcerated, is $3.01.
“We probably go through $200 a week just on the telephone,” Kim explains. “And the car, and the clothes, and the shoes. I mean, he’s gotten himself in trouble a couple of times in there and I’ve had to send money to those people.”
It appears that Kim’s financial support extends beyond Joey to include other inmates with whom he has had conflicts. The amount of money spent on these various needs and issues adds up quickly, illustrating the financial burden Kim has willingly taken on for her partner.
Despite the hefty financial commitment, Kim seems unfazed by the costs. Her dedication to Joey is clear, but there are underlying concerns that might complicate their future. One significant issue is Joey’s past struggle with substance abuse. In the clip, Joey reveals that he was addicted to opiates for more than two decades. This ongoing battle could pose a major challenge for their relationship once he is released, even with Kim’s support.
Another potential source of tension is Joey’s suspicion of infidelity. While Kim is handling a considerable financial burden, Joey is also dealing with fears about Kim’s loyalty while he remains behind bars. The possibility of infidelity, real or imagined, is a common struggle for couples facing such unique circumstances.
As Kim and Joey navigate these challenges, their story highlights the complexities of relationships involving incarcerated partners. Their situation sheds light on the financial and emotional sacrifices that often accompany such relationships, adding a layer of realism to their journey.
For fans eager to follow Kim and Joey’s story and see how these issues unfold, Love After Lockup airs Fridays at 8 p.m. EST on WEtv. Stay tuned to see how this couple manages their financial commitments and emotional hurdles as they work towards a future together.
