Luann de Lesseps DEFENDS Sonja Morgan’s Drunken Antics on ‘WWHL’

Luann de Lesseps has come to the defense of her longtime friend and former Real Housewives of New York City co-star Sonja Morgan following public criticism from Jeff Lewis over Sonja’s behavior at the recent Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen 15th anniversary event.

During an episode of Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast, Luann spoke candidly about Sonja’s antics, which had become a point of contention during the celebration. “Sonja’s very special. I adore her. But some people that don’t know her aren’t used to her antics. Let’s put it that way,” Luann explained, referencing the recent sale of Sonja’s Manhattan townhouse as a source of stress. “She’s got a lot of stuff going on right now. And, you know, alcohol was invented for a reason — to help you through s—t. She’s been going though a hard time.”

The Class With the Countess author also described Sonja’s state at the event, suggesting that her behavior, while surprising to some, was merely her enjoying herself. “He was surprised, I think, because he’s never really seen her enjoying vodka that much. I love her. But she gets a little…you know…and then she starts talking all over the place,” she said. Despite acknowledging that Sonja was a bit “messy,” Luann was quick to add, “It was a little messy, but it was fun. It was messy, but listen, I’ve fallen into a bush [on national television], so who am I to judge?”

Jeff Lewis had previously expressed his frustration with Sonja during his SiriusXM show “Jeff Lewis Live,” where he recounted his experience at the WWHL taping. “I was very annoyed by Sonja and, I believe… that they did a lot of work to edit her obnoxious, drunk behavior, but what you see was 20 times worse,” Lewis claimed. He described her as belligerent, rude, disrespectful, and confrontational, particularly noting a moment when she confronted him during a break.

Reports suggested that Sonja had arrived at the event already under the influence, leading to her being served water once her condition was apparent. This was highlighted during the “After Show,” where Sonja, holding a shot glass, protested to Luann, “This is water!”

Despite these challenges, Luann remains supportive of Sonja, with whom she stars in the reality series Luann & Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake.

The show, drawing inspiration from The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, is currently in discussions for a second season.

Luann shared her enthusiasm about the series and the difficulty in finding a new filming location that feels as authentic as Benton, Illinois, where the first season was shot.
