In a dramatic clash of opinions, former President Donald Trump blasted actor George Clooney after Clooney urged President Joe Biden to halt his re-election campaign in a New York Times op-ed.
Clooney, a well-known supporter of the Democratic Party, argued in his piece that while Biden played a pivotal role in defeating Trump in 2020, he did not see a path to victory in the upcoming November elections with Biden at the helm.
Trump took to Truth Social late Wednesday to voice his displeasure, labeling Clooney a “rat” and dismissing his cinematic achievements. “So now fake movie actor George Clooney, who never came close to making a great movie, is getting into the act. He’s turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are,” Trump posted. He further questioned Clooney’s political acumen, particularly criticizing his praise for Biden: “What does Clooney know about anything? He uses the Democrat ‘talking point’ that Biden, the WORST President in the history of the United States, has ‘saved our Democracy,'” Trump added.
Despite his critical stance in the op-ed, Clooney expressed a deep respect for Biden, commending his “character” and “morals.” However, he candidly shared his concerns about Biden’s capabilities, noting a noticeable decline in the president’s vigor and clarity since their last encounter. “It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” Clooney wrote.
The actor’s observations reflect a broader sentiment among some Hollywood elites and Democratic megadonors who have started to question Biden’s suitability for the presidency following his recent debate performance, which many found underwhelming.
Trump seized on these doubts in his social media tirade, suggesting Biden had diminished rather than preserved American democracy. “Crooked Joe Biden didn’t save our Democracy, he brought our Democracy to its knees. Clooney should get out of politics and go back to television. Movies never really worked for him!!!” Trump declared.
The discourse extended beyond political figures, with cultural commentator Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, chiming in with his critique of Clooney’s timing and motivations. “George Clooney, what a f—— hero this guy is, huh? Comes forward today — now, this guy threw a fundraiser, raised tens of millions, co-chair for Biden, three weeks ago. Today comes out, he’s like, ‘Guess what? The guy you saw in the debate, that vegetable, that’s f—— Biden, he’s a vegetable. He was a vegetable three weeks ago.’ Acting like he’s doing some heroic thing,” Portnoy commented sarcastically in a video on X.
Amid these swirling controversies and public calls for his withdrawal, Biden remains steadfast, assuring his supporters and the media that he intends to stay in the race, firmly believing he is the best candidate to challenge Trump.
