Violet Affleck, the 18-year-old daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, recently made a compelling appearance at a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting where she spoke passionately against mask bans. The high school graduate delivered a powerful speech advocating for continued mask availability, high-quality free COVID-19 testing, and the implementation of mask mandates in county medical facilities.
During her presentation, Violet shared her personal health struggles, revealing that she contracted a post-viral condition in 2019. “I’m OK now, but I saw first-hand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses,” she explained. “The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown that into sharper relief.” She highlighted the severe impacts of long COVID, a condition that affects one in ten infections and can severely impair neurological and cardiovascular functions.
Violet concluded her speech with a strong stance, stating, “One in 10 infections leads to long COVID, which is a devastating neurological [and] cardiovascular illness that can take away people’s ability to work, move, see, and even think,” demanding the board to “oppose mask bans for any reason.” She argued that such bans do not enhance safety but rather compromise the well-being of vulnerable community members and detract from the collective ability to participate in communal life in Los Angeles.
Dressed in a floral dress and donning a face mask, Violet, who is frequently seen wearing masks in public, stood firm on her position at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration. While her testimony has stirred mixed reactions on social media, many have praised her as an “amazing leader and role model.” One supporter expressed intentions to use Violet’s example to inspire their own children: “I’m showing this to my 7 & 9-year-old girls as a great example of a smart, thoughtful, and self-assured young woman doing what she knows is right, even in the face of massive societal pressure to cave.”
Garner, 52, has often publicly praised her daughter’s independence and foresight regarding her future. In a conversation with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on “Live with Kelly and Mark” in November 2023, Garner shared that Violet acted “like a champ” in the lead-up to her high school graduation, acknowledging her as a “self-starter” and expressing immense pride in her accomplishments.
Garner described herself as a “wreck” for a “whole month” leading up to Violet’s commencement in May, capturing her emotional state in Instagram photos captioned, “Tell me you have a graduate without telling me you have a graduate. (bless our hearts).” The graduation celebrations included a party in June which even Jennifer Lopez attended briefly, despite her and Ben’s impending divorce.
As Violet prepares for the next chapter of her life, she has hinted at potential college plans, sporting a Yale University sweatshirt in recent photos, suggesting where her academic journey might lead. In the meantime, she continues to spend her summer actively engaging in public discussions and making appearances with her family and Lopez, showing a keen engagement with both her personal and civic life.
