‘Love After Lockup’ Alum Back In Prison for Torture and Criminal Enterprise, Facing 58 Years!

Love After Lockup witnessed a tumultuous journey for Douglas Howard, who made headlines in Season 3 for his reentry into family life alongside his 12-year-old son and wife following a felony firearms conviction. However, the narrative took a dark turn as Howard now finds himself incarcerated once again, facing a staggering sentence ranging from 11 to 58 years for charges related to torture and conducting a criminal enterprise.

Earlier this year, Howard experienced a small victory when he secured a $45,000 settlement from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS). This settlement stemmed from an incident in which KDPS officers arrested Howard on August 11, 2021, for the aforementioned charges.

According to court documents, Howard alleged that Officer Justin Wolbrink of KDPS rammed a vehicle into him while he was riding his motorcycle, causing him to be thrown off. Subsequently, Wolbrink, along with officers Caleb Jones and Brett Bylsma, purportedly “assaulted and battered,” Howard before handcuffing him and transporting him to a local hospital via ambulance for treatment.

In his lawsuit, Howard contended that the use of force by the officers was excessive and violated his rights, seeking $75,000 in compensation for his injuries and legal fees.

However, police reports from both KDPS and the Michigan State Police (MSP) provided a different perspective, asserting that their actions were in accordance with KDPS policy and that Howard’s alleged wrongful conduct negated any claims for damages.

The arrest of Howard in August 2021 was the culmination of an extensive investigation, with multiple warrants out for his arrest. He was implicated in various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, weapons possession, and involvement in a kidnapping and torture case. Reports indicated that Howard had been using and selling significant quantities of methamphetamine, further complicating his legal predicament.

One particularly harrowing incident detailed in police reports involved Howard’s alleged kidnapping and torture of an individual in March 2021, during which he reportedly subjected the victim to physical assault and threats.

Despite attempts to evade law enforcement, Howard was apprehended during a police operation in August 2021, during which drugs, firearms, and stolen property were seized from multiple locations associated with him. The confrontation between Howard and officers culminated in a collision between his motorcycle and a police vehicle, leading to his arrest.

Following the incident, a settlement between Howard and the city of Kalamazoo was reached, with city commissioners approving the agreement during a public meeting on December 18, 2023. The terms of the settlement, finalized on March 12, 2024, were not disclosed by the city attorney’s office or the attorneys representing the involved officers.
