Gizelle Bryant Addresses Colorism Accusations, Claims Her Daughters Are Hurt by the Allegations!
Production for Season 9 of The Real Housewives of Potomac has kicked off, and Gizelle Bryant, a longstanding and central figure of the show, remains a key cast member. In a recent interview with Fox 5 DC, Gizelle addressed the longstanding issue of colorism within the cast.
Bryant, the daughter of the late civil rights activist Curtis Graves, firmly denied allegations of colorism, emphasizing the impact such accusations have on her family. “Am I a colorist? Absolutely not. My life speaks to that. I’m raising brown girls. It’s hurtful to them for people to say that about their mother,” she stated.
Gizelle, known for her resilience, said the accusations don’t bother her personally because she knows the truth. During the Season 7 reunion, the topic of lighter-skinned castmates receiving preferential treatment was brought up, leaving Bryant seemingly bewildered by the conversation.
Colorism has been a significant issue on RHOP, especially highlighted in Season 7 when Wendy Osefo was labeled “antagonistic” by Robyn Dixon after Mia Thornton threw a drink at her. After the incident aired, Wendy addressed the false perceptions and called out the fans’ misplaced outrage. “I vividly remember the outrage when people falsely assumed I threw a glass. Now, we all see the truth and magically the outrage disappears. How convenient,” she remarked.
Candiace Dillard, RHOP alum, also supported Wendy Osefo’s stance, believing that lighter-skinned castmates are held to different standards. During the reunion, Andy Cohen facilitated an open discussion on colorism, where Candiace began by defining the term and explaining its prevalence within the group.
“I’m viewed as the crybaby as the first tone to be emotional,” Candiace noted, comparing her treatment to that of Robyn, who has exhibited similar behavior without the same backlash. Robyn countered, saying she’s also been labeled a mean girl and aggressive.
Gizelle, appearing confused, asked, “What does you being emotional have to do with skin color?” Candiace responded, highlighting how she’s been villainized, though her explanation seemed to fall on deaf ears.
Karen Huger acknowledged that Candiace is judged more harshly than her lighter-skinned castmates. Ashley Darby also recognized her privilege as a light-skinned woman but asserted that her issues with the cast were due to personality clashes, not colorism. “It’s never based on a person’s skin color, that I can assert and maintain,” Ashley said.
Candiace, however, criticized Gizelle for her perceived “commitment to misunderstanding her.”
