Second Grade Teacher Arrested for Drugs in Classroom; Husband Overdoses in School Parking Lot

Last week, a Virginia elementary school teacher and her husband were arrested after the teacher was allegedly found to have brought “suspected narcotics” to school and both appeared to be under the influence.

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office reported that Candyce Leigh Carter, a 2nd grade teacher at Spotswood Elementary School, was observed by a School Resource Officer on May 16 exhibiting behavior indicative of drug influence.

Following the officer’s observation, a search led to the discovery of “suspected narcotics” within her classroom. Carter was subsequently arrested and faces charges of felony possession of schedule I/II narcotics, felony child endangerment, and felony child neglect or abuse.

The Sheriff’s Office assured that while no students were injured or directly exposed to the substances, they were medically evaluated as a precaution and the classroom underwent professional cleaning to ensure safety.

On the same day a Virginia elementary school teacher was arrested for possessing narcotics on school grounds, her husband was also taken into custody under distressing circumstances. Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office reported that, 34, was found in a vehicle in the parking lot of Spotswood Elementary School, visibly under the influence and requiring medical intervention.

NBC Washington disclosed that Spotsylvania County Fire & Rescue responded to an overdose call, finding Kristopher unresponsive and administering Narcan twice to revive him. Tragically, a 2-year-old child was also present in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The child was subsequently placed in the care of social services.

Kristopher was arrested on charges of felony child endangerment and felony child neglect or abuse. Following the incidents, both he and his wife, Candyce Leigh Carter, were detained at Rappahannock Regional Jail. Candyce is being held without bond, while Kristopher’s bond was set at $5,000.

In response to the events, School Board Chair Lorita Daniels emphasized the district’s commitment to safety and proper conduct, stating to FOX DC, “Spotsylvania County Public Schools takes all reports of alleged personnel misconduct very seriously and follows applicable district policies and procedures when responding to and investigating complaints.”

Daniels also praised the swift actions of the local sheriff’s department and reassured the community that the district will persist in its efforts to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff.
