The urgency of the situation was highlighted by a report from the Associated Press that on the same night as the Met Gala, Israeli military forces declared an invasion into Rafah. This area is home to over a million Palestinian refugees, including more than 600,000 children, displaced since October 7. The juxtaposition of celebrities like Zendaya, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Kylie Jenner celebrating in opulence while silence pervades on pressing global issues has sparked significant backlash and calls for accountability among the high-profile attendees.

The growing discontent among fans over celebrities’ silence on significant global issues has spurred the creation of social media accounts like Blockout.2024 on Instagram. This account, which emerged in the wake of the 2024 Met Gala, focuses on naming high-profile celebrities, brands, and musicians who have not sufficiently addressed the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Within just two days of its inception, Blockout.2024 has attracted over 100,000 followers.
Echoing the sentiments of the online movement, TikTok creator Rae, known by her handle ladyfromtheoutside, called for what she terms a “digital guillotine” or “digittine.” On Thursday, she advocated for a mass blocking of celebrities, influencers, and wealthy socialites who fail to leverage their platforms for humanitarian causes. “It’s time to block all the celebrities, influencers, and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need,” Rae declared, emphasizing the role of public figures in addressing global crises.
Rae, a TikTok creator advocating for a widespread social media protest, emphasized the power of public engagement in holding celebrities accountable. “We gave them their platforms. It’s time to take it back, take our views away, our likes, our comments, our money by blocking them on all social media and digital platforms,” she argued, underscoring the influence of collective action.
One of Rae’s initial targets for the so-called ‘digitine’ is TikTok star Haley Kalil, known online as Haleyy Baylee. Kalil recently drew ire for her Met Gala post where she mimed to a sound clip of Kirsten Dunst’s character in the 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” saying, “Let them eat cake.” This choice was seen by critics as tone-deaf, particularly given the current global crises, sparking calls for her inclusion in the digital boycott.

Rae publicly criticized TikTok star Haley Kalil for her perceived insensitivity during the Met Gala. “Haley Bayleyy for your ignorant decision to attend the $75,000 ticket Met Gala and recite ‘Let them eat cake’ while you have done nothing with your 10 million follower platform,” Rae exclaimed. “As people are starving and dying, we sentence you to the ‘digitine.’”
In response to the intense backlash, Kalil issued a detailed explanation on her TikTok account. She clarified that she did not actually attend the Met Gala as a guest but was contracted by E! News to cover the event and conduct interviews with celebrities on their arrival at the prestigious occasion. This clarification was aimed at addressing the misperceptions about her role and involvement in the event.
Haley Kalil responded to the criticism surrounding her use of a controversial sound clip in her Met Gala coverage with an apology and clarification. Speaking about her choice of the trending sound clip from “Marie Antoinette” that said “Let them eat cake,” she expressed her regrets on TikTok. “I am so, so, so sorry that I chose a sound that you guys could ever possibly feel was malicious in nature,” the 27-year-old stated, as reported by Dexerto. She insisted there was “no deeper meaning” behind her action.
Continuing her response, Haley emphasized her personal disconnect from the elite circles typically associated with the Met Gala. “I never even thought it would be taken in that way because I wasn’t elite enough to even be invited to the Met Gala,” she explained. “I’m not elite, I am a normal person.”
The situation in Gaza remains dire and highly distressing. On October 7, Hamas launched an attack that resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 Israelis and led to about 250 being taken hostage. In response, Israeli military actions have reportedly led to the deaths of approximately 35,000 Palestinians, with the majority being women and children, and more than 77,000 injured. Northern Gaza is currently facing a severe famine, and the humanitarian crisis across the region is worsening rapidly. This escalating conflict continues to cause immense suffering and loss on both sides.
