Bethenny Frankel Alleges Torture and PTSD Resulting from Jason Hoppy Divorce!
Bethenny Frankel is finally opening up about “something that has been impossible to talk about” for years, her ten-year long divorce from ex-husband, Jason Hoppy.
The Real Housewives of New York City alum shared the news during Thursday’s episode of her “Just B” podcast. Bethenny noted that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the divorce war and the custody battle over the ex-couple’s daughter, Brynn.
“I’ve been burned. I have massive trust issues, and I have post-traumatic stress disorder. It was literally the most traumatizing thing I will hopefully ever go through in my life,” she said Thursday.
The 53-year-old called her decade-long divorce “more tortuous” than grieving the death of a loved one. Bethenny’s late on-again-off-again boyfriend, Dennis Shields, passed away from a drug overdose in August, 2018.
“I thought I would never survive it. I did not see a way out,” she continued. “It was suffocating. I thought I was gonna be miserable for the rest of my life.”
Bethenny called the experience “mental and emotional torture” and referred to herself amid the ordeal as a “powerless, tortured” individual.
“I have had every single f–king thing except for physical abuse done to me, and I am an expert on this topic,” the Skinnygirl mogul alleged.
Bethenny continued — “I have been through a f–king war –– a war. I have questioned myself as a human, as a parent, because I was told so many times otherwise how terrible I was and disgusting and old and irrelevant and so abused, because I had no power to get out of it.”
The former Bravo star explained that she planned to spill her personal horror story in a series of podcast episodes.
“How a person who is so smart and so successful could make such poor judgement calls and decisions or just not know or just have a bad hand, but it’s been a journey, so I’m ready to discuss it,” she shared.
Bethenny clarified that her daughter is now 13 years old and knows the whole story. She explained that she now believed she could discuss the rough experience “thoughtfully and carefully” with her listeners.
Bethenny noted that the trauma from the divorce had affected her relationship with fiancé, Paul Bernon. Bethenny and Paul have been intermittently engaged since 2018.
“It’s why I have not gotten married again, or I’m not sure if I would ever get married again,” she said.
Bethenny shared that she was considering telling her story in a series of 10 podcast episodes, one for each year of her divorce.
Bethenny and Hoppy tied the knot in March 2010. They announced their separation in December 2012, and Bethenny filed for divorce the following month. The pair battled in court over finances and custody of Brynn for the next ten years.
They struck a financial settlement in 2016 but their divorce was not finalized until January, 2021. Bethenny had been awarded full legal and primary residential custody of their daughter by December 2021, and no longer had to pay Hoppy child support.
