Michigan School Shooter’s Parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, Sentenced to 10-15 Years in Prison!

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of Michigan school shooter, Ethan Crumbley, were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison after being found guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

James and Jennifer were tried separately earlier this year, but were sentenced together. The case marks the first time that a school shooter’s parents have been held directly accountable for the actions of their child.

Oakland County prosecutors asked the court to sentence Ethan’s mother and father to between 10-15 years in prison. The judge hit both James and Jennifer with the maximum sentence, minus 858 days already served.

On November 30, 2021, Ethan killed four of his classmates, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, Tate Mare, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14 and Justin Shilling, 17, at Oxford High School.

Prosecutors claimed that both parents exhibited a “chilling lack if remorse” in regard to their then-15-year-old son murdering four of his peers.

Jennifer addressed the court at the sentencing hearing, after the victim impact statements were read.

She said — “I sit here today to express my deepest sorrows for the families of Hana, Tate, Madisyn, Justin and to all those affected on November 30, 2021.”

Jennifer appeared to walk back her previous claim that she could not have predicted her son’s horrific actions. She said that her response during the trial would have “absolutely been different” had she known her son was capable of murder.

James asked the court to “sentence me in a fair way,” as he was unaware that his son was planning a school shooting. He also repeatedly claimed that the “the truth” had not been presented during the trial.

Prosecutors included segments from James’ phone calls made from jail after he was found guilty. They claimed that “his jail calls show a total lack of remorse, he blames everyone but himself.” Prosecutors added James’ repeated assertions that he was being persecuted and that he considered  himself a “martyr.”

They stated — “After he could no longer express his threats through jail calls because his privileges were revoked, he chose to gesture his middle finger toward the prosecution in the middle of the trial.”

Both James and Jennifer were found grossly negligent, as they allowed the teenager to own guns and overlooked obvious signs of mental illness. The couple has been behind bars since 2021, after they were located in a Detroit warehouse after the shooting and a subsequent police manhunt.

The couple’s individual lawyers asked for prison sentences not to exceed five years. Jennifer’s defense attorney asked for house arrest and stated that she could be supervised in the lawyer’s home.

Ethan was sentenced to life in prison without parole in December 2023.
