Karen Huger Blames DUI Crash On Her Dead Mother: ‘Grande Dame of Lies’ 

Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger has sparked controversy by blaming her recent DUI car crash to her deceased mother.

Karen Huger, 60, has issued a statement to TMZ following her DUI crash. She told the outlet: 

“Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes during this very frightening experience. I am still in shock from last nights incident, but grateful to be alive today. With the passing of my Beloved Mother, Grief comes and goes in waves, and with Mothers Day approaching it has felt more like a tsunami.”

She added, “Last night I met a girlfriend for dinner, we talked and brought up some very emotionally sensitive topics. I was crying on my way home and saw a car heading right for me. I swerved to avoid the head-on collision, hit the divider and then a tree. I’m hurt, bruised up a bit, but so grateful I am alive! I did receive citations, one of which was unrelated to the incident which is understandable, but what was most surprising is that the car that almost hit me just drove away!”

“I would like to stress, it’s important to understand your emotional state when driving and may this be a reminder to all to use their seatbelts, my Mother may be my Guardian Angel but the seatbelt saved my life,” she ended.

As reported, the Real Housewives of Potomac star is facing serious legal trouble following a high-speed car crash late Tuesday night (March 19, 2024). According to Montgomery County records, the reality star has been officially charged with driving under the influence (DUI), along with a charge of driving while impaired by alcohol. Both charges will require court appearances.

In addition to these charges, Karen Huger has also been issued eight traffic violations, including allegations of negligent and reckless driving, speeding, driving with a suspended registration, and failure to inform the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration of her change of address. The fines associated with these violations range from $50 to $510 and will also require court appearances.

Reports suggest that Karen shared details about the events leading up to the crash, revealing that she was returning home from dinner with a friend and engaged in a conversation about serious matters. She admitted to crying while driving and claimed that her heightened emotions led to the accident. Karen stated that she swerved away from an oncoming vehicle, resulting in a loss of control.

The severe car accident resulted in the total loss of Karen’s luxury 2017 Maserati. The collision occurred when she struck a median and a crosswalk sign at an intersection before ultimately crashing into a parking sign.

A spokesperson for Maryland’s Montgomery County Police Department described Karen’s driving leading up to the crash as “aggressive,” as reported by TMZ. While it remains uncertain whether Karen sustained serious injuries in the crash, her vehicle was reportedly extensively damaged and had to be towed away from the scene.

Outraged fans wasted no time in reacting to the Grande Dame of Potomac blaming her drunk driving incident on her deceased mother. One person wrote, “This lady likes to deflect and emotionally manipulate viewers. I lost my mom 4 years ago but I’m not going to drink and drive.”

Another commented, “Karen needs to stop attributing things to her grief and take ownership of her choices.”

Someone else shared, “She always has a way of removing herself from every situation and blaming someone else! Deflection & Never owning what she does! She holds everyone else accountable for what they do & say! I’m sure this gave Robyn Dixon a good laugh. Karen is def a Karen.”

A critic wrote, “Wow! What a great way to deflect the DUI! And certainly even more amazing, that the other person drove away! I know it happens that people run from accidents, but, when you aren’t taking responsibility for your DUI, it’s a little suspect! And it’s sad, she’s only thankful that she didn’t get more hurt, never mentioned that she’s happy she didn’t hurt anyone else. More like grand “damn!”

This is not the first time Karen has been involved with the law. In 2016, she pleaded guilty to a DWI (Driving While Impaired by Alcohol) charge and accepted a plea deal of probation. She recounted the incident, revealing that she was arrested for drunk driving after having a celebratory dinner and returning to her home in Potomac, Maryland.
