VP Kamala Harris’ Visit to Abortion Clinic Met With Boos
Vice President Kamala Harris made history last week when she visited an abortion clinic as part of the Biden administration’s “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” Tour.
Some clinic staffers confronted the vice president over why it took so long for a sitting president or vice-president to visit a facility where abortions are performed.
Harris stated that her visit was prompted by a healthcare crisis, referencing the Dobbs decision and the subsequent repercussions on reproductive services. She noted the closure of multiple health care facilities during her speech.
She reminded the crowd that reproductive healthcare included pap smears and breast cancer screenings, not just abortion services. Harris called restricting access to such services a “travesty.”
“Well, what I saw were, I don’t know, maybe two dozen healthcare workers who really care — really care about their patients and who understand that in the healthcare delivery system, regardless of your gender or your healthcare need,” she told her audience. “I think we should all expect, and certainly we all desire, that you will be treated with dignity and you’ll be treated in an environment where you feel safe.”
“And by that, I mean safe to be free from judgment, to be in an environment where you are actually and really listened to, where your needs and your expression of your needs are taken seriously,” Harris continued. “And walking through this clinic, that’s what I saw are people who have dedicated their lives to the profession of providing healthcare in a safe place that gives people dignity. And I think we should all want that for each other.”
Harris spoke about the upcoming election and how it could impact legislative outcomes, when asked about her commitment to protecting abortion rights.
She added that the government had an obligation to respect each individual’s autonomy in making healthcare decisions, irrespective of religious beliefs.
Vice President Harris reiterated the importance of reinstating Roe v. Wade, via a legislative process, which would codify the overturned Supreme Court decision into law.
