Olivia Munn Undergoes Double Mastectomy After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Olivia Munn took to social media Wednesday to announce that she had undergone a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer, in April 2023.

The actress explained that her doctor decided to calculate her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, after she and her sister, Sara Potts, tested negative for the BRACA gene, a genetic indicator of a potential future cancer diagnosis. Munn had also received a clear mammogram report, at the time.

“The fact that she did saved my life,” Munn wrote on Instagram. She added that her lifetime risk stood at 37 percent.

Munn’s doctor told her to go for an MRI, an ultrasound and finally a biopsy, which confirmed that she had luminal B cancer, an “aggressive, fast moving cancer” in both breasts.

The “Newsroom” actress underwent a double mastectomy a month later and four additional surgeries over the following ten months.

“I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next,” she explained. “I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options.”

The 43-year-old expressed gratitude for her support system, including her family, friends and partner, John Mulaney, 41, for helping her through the ordeal.

“I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect,” she continued.

Munn wrote — “For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of out little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
