Wendy Williams Diagnosed with Aphasia and Dementia: Key Details Before Documentary Premiere

Wendy Williams has received a diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), according to a recent press release. These diagnoses were made last year “after undergoing a battery of medical tests.”

Aphasia, as explained by Mayo Clinic, is a medical condition that can impair someone’s ability to speak, write, and understand language, both verbally and in written form. FTD, on the other hand, is the most common form of dementia and can affect behavior, personality, language, and movement. Both conditions have already posed significant challenges in Wendy’s life, according to the statement from her team below:

The decision to share this news was difficult and made after careful consideration, not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others facing similar circumstances. Unfortunately, many individuals diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia face stigma and misunderstanding, particularly when they begin to exhibit behavioral changes but have not yet received a diagnosis.

The statement continues: There is hope that with early detection and far more empathy, the stigma associated with dementia will be eliminated, and those affected will receive the understanding, support, and care they deserve and need.

Wendy is still able to do many things for herself. Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humor and is receiving the care she requires to make sure she is protected and that her needs are addressed. She is appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way.

The announcement comes just ahead of the release of “Where Is Wendy Williams?” – a new Lifetime documentary that delves into the famed TV host’s withdrawal from the spotlight amidst personal, health, and financial struggles. It’s a question that even some of her closest relatives are unable to answer.

Wendy Williams, 59, did not host the final season of her talk show from August 2021 to June 2022. She repeatedly postponed her return and raised concerns among fans as she was photographed needing assistance at wellness centers. Her finances were frozen by her former wealth manager, who alleged that she was “incapacitated” and “of unsound mind,” resulting in her being placed under guardianship.

Filming for the documentary began in August 2022 with the aim of capturing Wendy Williams’ comeback as she ventured into podcasting. However, she struggled with alcoholism alongside her existing health issues, including Graves’ disease and lymphedema.

Production ceased in April 2023 when Wendy Williams was found in her apartment in distress. She was admitted to a facility for cognitive issues related to alcohol use, as revealed by her son, Kevin Hunter Jr., in the documentary.

In the documentary trailer, Wendy Williams appears confused and becomes agitated when questioned about her alcohol consumption. Her family members express concern over her cognitive abilities, as well as her inner circle and guardian.

While the documentary discloses that Wendy Williams entered inpatient treatment nearly a year ago, her sister and niece are unaware of her current whereabouts. They report that she is doing better physically and mentally, but they have no direct contact with her, as only her guardian has full access.

The decision to share this news about Wendy Williams’ diagnoses was not taken lightly and was made to advocate for understanding and compassion for her, as well as to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. The hope is that with early detection and greater empathy, the stigma associated with dementia can be eliminated, and those affected can receive the support they need.

Despite the challenges, Wendy Williams maintains her trademark sense of humor and is receiving the necessary care. She is grateful for the kind thoughts and well wishes sent her way.
