Guardian For Wendy Williams Files Emergency Lawsuit to Stop ‘Lifetime’ from Airing Documentary
According to court documents, Sabrina Morrissey, Wendy Williams‘ temporary guardian, filed a sealed lawsuit against the Lifetime network earlier this week.
While the details of the lawsuit remain sealed, it appears that Morrissey is seeking a temporary restraining order and an order to show cause for an injunction.
Though the exact reason behind the lawsuit remains uncertain, the filing of a restraining order suggests a potential intention to halt the release of the documentary or any related project.
The court documents were submitted shortly before the premiere of the “Where is Wendy Williams,” documentary, which Williams executive produced. Scheduled to air on Saturday, the timing of the filing raises questions about its potential impact on the documentary’s release.
A hearing has been scheduled for the following week to determine whether the documents should remain sealed. However, considering the imminent release of the documentary, a judge might expedite the decision-making process before the scheduled hearing.
Earlier this month, the trailer for the documentary was unveiled, offering fans a sobering look into the challenges faced by the renowned talk show host as she grapples with alcoholism and financial difficulties under the oversight of a guardian. In the footage, the 59-year-old candidly declares, “I have no money.” Shortly after its release, Lifetime removed the trailer from circulation.
Williams’ son, Kevin Hunter Jr., and her sister, Wanda, were also featured in the documentary, with Kevin alleging that her court-appointed guardian has failed to adequately protect his mother. “They took her away from us,” he claimed.
The announcement of the legal filing also followed closely after Wendy Williams’ diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia.
“As Wendy’s fans are aware, in the past she has been open with the public about her medical struggles with Graves’ Disease and Lymphedema as well as other significant challenges related to her health,” her team wrote in a press release Thursday.
According to the statement, the “Wendy Williams Show” host went to get testing done last year after noticing memory and speech issues that led her to act “erratically.”
“Receiving a diagnosis has enabled Wendy to receive the medical care she requires,” the statement said.
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) encompasses a range of disorders resulting from the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, as explained by Johns Hopkins Medicine. This condition can manifest in various ways, affecting behavior, personality, language, and motor functions.
In a press release, Williams’ team stated, “The decision to share this news was difficult and made after careful consideration, not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others facing similar circumstances.”
Shortly after the news emerged, Williams’ niece, Alex Finnie, appeared on “The View,” offering insights into her aunt’s condition. She mentioned that despite the diagnosis, Williams “sounds really good” and is still capable of engaging in “full conversations.”
