Court records obtained by AllAboutTheTea.com, reveal that Federal Realty Investment Trust TA Pallas Apartments, owners of the Pallas Apartments, a prestigious high-rise residence in Bethesda, Maryland, filed a lawsuit against the Real Housewives of Potomac couple on January 18.

The claim asserts that Mia and Gordan Thornton failed to fulfill her rental obligations as stipulated in their lease agreement.

The couple relocated to the luxury apartment as a result of downsizing from their expensive home, a move necessitated by financial difficulties stemming from a family business conflict involving Gordan and his relatives.

In the first episode of Season 8, Mia and Gordon find themselves in a new rental home, striving to adjust to the realities of domestic downsizing.

“Moving out of the big house has been quite an adjustment,” says Mia, adding that their space has shrunk from 11,000 square feet to 1,500 square feet. “Yeah, it’s like a closet.”

Feeling claustrophobic is hardly a cause for celebration. However, the option to live lavishly is off the table, given the severe financial constraints linked to their ownership of The Joint Chiropractic franchise, a network of wellness centers.

“As far as cost is concerned, we can no longer afford $10,000 a month with everything that was going on with our businesses,” she explained.

In a statement posted on her Instagram page, Mia disclosed her need to leave her “big house” due to unexpected developments, subtly referencing allegations of Gordon’s brother embezzling their funds.

“Reverse, reverse. Yes, we MOVED!” she confirmed on January 5. “This was bittersweet as we anticipated living in the big house for at least 3 years while we decided to build/purchase, continue to rent who knows, but due to unforeseen circumstances, our big space got cut short. One thing about me, I never stay down for long. Minor setback! Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to show you our new space! Elevator up … Penthouse Living, we return!”

Then, after sharing a series of hashtags, including “blessings,” “the comeback,” “is always better,” and “I have work to do,” Mia said she was “sending love, peace, and prosperity” to her followers.

“Life is tough, but don’t give up when things happen to you. Keep pushing, realign with your purpose and keep pushing!” she advised.

In September 2023, the couple ended their 11-year marriage. Together, they have two children: an 8-year-old son, Jeremiah Carter, and a 6-year-old daughter, Juliana. Additionally, both have one child from previous relationships.

In episode 5, Mia discussed the impact of their issues on the family during a therapy session with Gordon.

“We have recently gone through a financial change with our business, and having to downsize, and having to navigate a lot,” Mia told the therapist.

“The relationship between Gordon and I has definitely changed,” she continued. “Ever since Gordon was voted out of the family business, he’s been working a lot more because we were expanding our portfolio with other partnership groups, so it is causing a lot of tension inside of our marriage. And, to me, spending time with the kids and having balance is so much better than us always working and then we look up and our kids are grown.”

According to court records, a hearing is scheduled on March 27, 2024, at Montgomery District Court in Rockville, Maryland.

Real Housewives of Potomac airs Sunday nights, at 8:00pm ET, on Bravo.
