Jazz Regrets Transitioning

During Season 8, Jazz Jennings engaged in a deep and heartfelt conversation with her mother. Jazz shared feelings of profound brokenness and a struggle to embrace her true self. The scene raised questions about the impact of lifelong hormone treatments and surgeries, which were aimed at modifying Jazz’s appearance, on her emotional well-being and sense of self. The scene highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by Jazz in her journey.

Jazz elaborates to her mother that she continues to go “back to negative” and that she “can’t get out of [her] head.” She explains: “It just doesn’t stop.”

In an attempt to prevent the breakdown, Jeanette tried to reassure Jazz, who had recently gone on a date with a woman in an episode, that everything will be fine. “It’s okay, give me a hug. I know what you’re going through. We’ve been there before,” she says.

Jazz then reveals the truth, “I just want to feel like myself, like that’s it. I don’t care,” she said. “All I want is to be happy and feel like me, and I don’t feel like me, ever.”

Jazz flat out tells her, “I don’t feel like me, ever!”

Jeanette attempts to discourage Jazz from engaging in excessive soul-searching, “But the more you’re talking about yourself, it gets harder. You’re digging in and it’s making you put a magnifying glass on what’s already difficult as it is. So this is hard for you, I know. And we don’t want to push it.”

Mental Health Disorder

In 2021, Jennings revealed that she was struggling with a binge-eating disorder, after putting on a “substantial amount of weight.” She posted some before and after pics, revealing that she had gained “almost 100 lbs. in a little less than 2 years.”

After sex change surgeries, Jazz gained more than 100 pounds due to binge eating and various mental health disorders. Many fans believe that Jazz’ penile inversion vaginoplasty was the cause of her mental difficulties.

She captioned the photos — “As many of you have noticed, over the past few years, I have gained a substantial amount of weight.’

“I suffer from binge-eating disorder, a disease in which I’m not only addicted to food, but I eat it in large quantities,” Jennings continued. “My binging, along with an increased appetite I experience from some of the meds I’m on, has caused me to gain almost 100 lbs. in a little less than 2 years. I’m posting this photo because it’s time for me to address my weight gain and hold myself accountable.”

The National Eating Disorder Association defines the common eating disorder  as a “severe, life-threatening, and treatable eating disorder.”

Jennings wrote at the time — “I’m ready to change my ways; I’ve been saying I’m ready to turn over a new leaf, but I’m running out of trees now. I’m ready to take the initiative and create positive changes when it comes to my health and body. I have a fabulous team supporting me, both professionals and family/friends, but at the end of the day, I have to be the one committed toward bettering myself. I know I have the power in me to lose the weight, and I intend on sharing my progress with all of you. Love you all, and thanks for understanding the battle I’m fighting to win.”
