Mama June Shannon Awarded Temporary Custody of Granddaughter

Mama June Shannon has been awarded temporary sole custody of her 11-year-old granddaughter, Kaitlyn Cardwell, amid a custody fight with the ex-husband of her late daughter, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell.

Court documents obtained by Radar Online revealed that the Mama June: Family Crisis matriarch filed a “petition for change of child custody and for emergency ex parte relief” in a Georgia Court. The documents were filed only days after Michael Cardwell filed his own petition for custody of the child. 

June stated that Kaitlyn’s father was “unknown” in her court filing. She said — “The child does not have a legal father.”

June, who has been married to Justin Stroud for nearly two years, noted that Kaitlyn had been living with her since December 9, the day her mother passed away. She pointed out that she had previously been granted temporary guardianship of her granddaughter. 

The filing stated — “More recently, approximately one month before her passing the mother and child began residing with [June].”

June added that she was not “aware of any interested parties other than herself that would have standing to seek custody of the child.”

The WeTV star argued that it would be in Kaitlyn’s best interest to remain under her care. 

A judge granted June’s emergency motion and awarded her sole custody until the case could be hashed out in a future hearing. 

June’s eldest daughter died after a 10-month battle with adrenal carcinoma. Michael Cardwell was married to the “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” alum from 2014-2017. Michael filed the lawsuit against June on December 17, a little more than a week after the 29-year-old’s death.

In documents obtained by The Sun, Michael stated that he had “fully and completely undertaken a permanent, unequivocal, committed, and responsible parental role” in the life of the pre-teen. 

He said that he had built an “independent relationship” with Kaitlyn during his visits with the biological daughter he shared with Anna, Kylee, 8, following the couple’s split. He emphasized that Anna had “fostered and supported” his relationship with Kylee’s half-sister. 

Michael also cited the strained relationship between Anna and her mother, in his argument. 

He stated — “Anna has been raised by her maternal grandmother in Griffin, Georgia since she was approximately eight years old and only returned to the home of June Shannon when she was 17.”

“Anna has had a very sordid relationship with her mother throughout her life and went various periods of time without speaking to her. Likewise, June’s presence in the minor child’s life has been inconsistent.”
