GMA’s Robin Roberts Scolds Co-Host After Heartfelt Segment Turns Foul

Robin Roberts delivered a swift comeback after her Good Morning America co-host, Lara Spencer, wrapped a heartwarming human interest piece with a serious health warning.

On Monday, Robin Roberts launched a segment profiling a high school student who  swam around the island of Manhattan to raise funds for charity. Maya Merhige, a high school junior, completed the 28 mile swim in 8 hours and 43 minutes.

The 15-year-old stroked under 20 bridges and through 3 rivers, completing the marathon in conjunction with Swim Across America to raise money for cancer research. Maya shared that the cause inspired to “keep going” during her grueling swim. Lara noted that Maya had raised over $60k in fundraising over the past eight years.

Lara abruptly shifted gears, ending the uplifting segment with a serious warning to GMA viewers.

She said — “According to our guidelines put out by tour groups, it’s okay to swim in the rivers around Manhattan, as long as you keep your head above water and your mouth closed at all times to reduce direct exposure to, and I quote, ‘Parasites, bacteria, and other microorganisms found in rivers like the Hudson.’”

Lara covered her mouth after issuing her warning, seemingly aware that she had drastically shifted the narrative. Robin laughed before asking Lara why she had to end the segment on such a negative note.

Robin Roberts lightheartedly pointed out — “It was a feel-good story.”

Co-host, George Stephanopoulos chimed in — “Cause, you know, somebody else is gonna go jump in the river.”

Lara ended the discussion, commenting — “We want to make sure everybody is aware. Maya, great job.”

Robin returned to GMA on Monday, after being absent on Friday. Michael Strahan also took Friday off.

Robin and Lara reported from London last week, as the morning duo covered Wimbledon.

Lara shared a cute selfie alongside her co-star and two other gal pals while across the pond. The ladies, who appeared thrilled to be attending the premiere sports event, rocked bright blouses and blazers for the occasion.

Robin previously stepped away from social media while on summer break with fianceé, Amber Laign.
