‘Below Deck Med’ Alum DISS Captain Sandy, Says She’s A ‘TV Captain,’ Who Needs Help From ‘Qualified Captains’ While Filming
Below Deck Mediterranean chef, Matthew Shea, dissed Captain Sandy Yawn on social media Wednesday, labeling his former boss “just a tv captain.”
Matthew, who appeared on the show during Season 6, quickly proved himself in the galley, but Captain Sandy wanted him off the crew after he appeared to fake a knee injury to avoid work. Covid staffing challenges forced Captain Sandy and Matthew to coexist amid a brewing feud.
Matthew’s recent jab came after Katie Flood posted a photo snapped alongside Malia White and Alex Propson, asking her followers to weigh in on which show they liked better — “Below Deck Med” or “Below Deck Sailing Yacht.”
Matthew immediately chimed in — “Sailing … because [Captain Glenn Shephard is] a real captain not just a tv captain.”
A fan asked the chef — “you would definitely know someone that’s faking it … how’s your knee BTW?”
Matthew responded — “[Knee’s] good! I’ve sailed across the Atlantic with Glenn. Sandy works 6 weeks a year on a boat only while show is filming and there’s always qualified captains off camera in the bridge with her.”
Another Below Deck Med chef credited Captain Sandy for encouraging him to press on during an emotionally difficult season.
Fans will remember Chef Dave White from Season 7, as his undercover relationship with chief stewardess, Natasha Webb, dominated his storyline. Despite the culinary pro’s personal drama, Captain Sandy recently told Showbiz Cheat Sheet that Dave was her favorite chef.
“Forget the personal [issues] aside and then Ben [Robinson] because I only had Ben for two charters, but [White] is the best chef,” she told the outlet while promoting “Chips Ahoy!”
“Did you see the food?” she asked. “He’d make five breads – five breads – every morning from scratch!”
She added — “His desserts were cool. If you go to his Instagram, you’ll see the bird’s nest. It’s an actual dessert that looks like eggs hatched in a bird’s nest.”
Fans know that Dave struggled throughout the charter season and almost made an exit after lashing out at Natasha via a series of nasty text messages. Natasha took the matter to Captain Sandy, who gave Dave another shot to redeem himself.
“I’m not gonna lie, it was tough,” Dave said on Malia White’s “Total Ship Show” podcast. “It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, actually. Mentally it was really, really, really difficult.”
“If I wasn’t good at my job, I would 100% have failed miserably,” he added. “I love my job and am so passionate about cooking and it really kind of just about kept me kind of sane. It really kind of kept me together. I just could just fully focus on what I had to do.”
“Nobody would really ever understand. Imagine working on a yacht on steroids with lots of cameras following you around with a bunch of people you’d never worked with before,” Malia said. “Surely that should be enough to explain how hard it is to walk onto the yacht and in 24 hours you pick up charter.”
“It’s ridiculous but that’s what happens. Some people think it’s fake, but it is not,” he said. “You are literally designed to fail. And then with some women dramas or men dramas and just being right on top of it. I kind of got through it and I’m really proud of myself. I tried to leave twice, but [Captain] Sandy [Yawn] talked me out of it.”
Malia referred to Captain Sandy as a “hero” during a separate podcast appearance.
“Captain Sandy could have gotten me fired, she was very supportive,” Malia said on the “Another Below Deck” Podcast. “Sandy’s a hero. I respect her. Sandy, what she’s achieved, it must be so hard … honestly, a captain of her status has to manage these reprobates. All I can tell you right now is what she did for me was, she gave me a chance.”
