Why Was Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie Missing from Monday’s Show?
Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie were MIA on Monday’s broadcast of the Today show. Jacob Soboroff, Craig Melvin and Today Weekend host, Kristen Welker, stepped in to take over for the absent duo.
The show did not offer a reason for the cast shakeup, but it appears likely that Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie took a day off for Juneteenth.
Both of the ladies spent quality time with their families over the weekend, and Savannah shared a glimpse of her husband, Michael Feldman, celebrating Father’s Day with their children, daughter, Vale, 8 and six-year-old son, Charley. The Today host posted a cute photo of the political consultant opening gifts from the kids on his special day. The 51-year-old Today anchor captioned the photo — “The best ever.”
Hoda, 58, celebrated Father’s Day alongside her ex-fiancé, Joel Schiffman, and two daughters, Haley, 6, and Hope, 4.
Savannah has been absent from the set of Today multiple times over the last few weeks. Last Friday, she was replaced by Craig Melvin, after Hoda mentioned that her co-host “had the day off.”
Earlier that same week, Savannah took her mom Nancy and daughter Vale to see “Funny Girl,” in New York City, posting a photo snapped in front of the August Wilson Theatre.
Savannah captioned the post — “Amazing visit to @funnygirlbwy – with my beautiful and funny girls @leamichele brought down the house. born to play Fanny!”
Lea Michele stars in the play as Fanny Brice, a woman trying to make her mark on Broadway.
Last month, the daytime anchor weighed in on Jeopardy contestant, Ben Chan’s devastating loss, after hearing from fans who were furious over how the show handled the challenge that handed him the defeat.
Chan’s long run on the game show ended after his Final Jeopardy answer was rejected over one incorrect letter.
Savannah noted that a “spelling error ended Ben Chan’s nine-day winning streak and some fans are asking for a re-do,” before playing a clip of the game-changing moment.
Jeopardy host, Mayim Bialik, broke the news that Chan’s response was incorrect after he wrote “Beatrice & Benedict” instead of “Beatrice and Benedick.”
Sheinelle Jones, who was subbing for Carson Daly, asked her co-hosts for their take on the decision and Savannah pointed out — “It’s Jeopardy. You gotta be on your game.”
Sheinelle dubbed Savannah the “Jeopardy queen,” and Craig Melvin and Hoda Kotb chimed in that she was the expert because she once guest-hosted the quiz show.
“What happens is, they tape it, and then you look over,” Savannah revealed. “You’re looking at the judge like, ‘Does it count? Does it not count?’ And they’ll be like, ’No, no.’”
The daytime host added that Ben’s response was “different” from the correct answer and that the show takes technicalities seriously.
