Mama June Does NOT Like Alana’s Black Boyfriend

Mama June Shannon is speaking out about her daughter, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson’s boyfriend, Dralin Carswell.

The 43-year-old spoke about the relationship while promoting the Season 6 premiere of Mama June: Family Crisis. 

“You gotta remember Alana isn’t that small, [she’s an older] girl than y’all have [kept] her in that bubble,” the mom of four told the InTouch.

Alana, 17 and Dralin, 21, who have been together for two years, have faced sharp criticism because of their age difference.

June pointed out that her other daughter, Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird and husband, Josh Efird, were around the same ages when they began their relationship. Josh and Pumpkin wed in 2018 and share four children together, Ella, 5, Bentley, 20 months, and 11-month-old twins, Sylus and Stella.

“[Lauryn] was 15 and Josh was almost 20 … y’all didn’t have a problem with that,” June said. “They have been together almost eight years and I feel like Dralin is not on the maturity level of a 20 year old because he is very childish. I mean, very childish to me.”

June’s husband, Justin Stroud, chimed in that Dralin “loves” Alana.

They’re still kids,” Justin, 35, noted. “It ain’t like he’s 28, 29 years old. He’s still a child himself, so he’s not gonna get everything right at the beginning. You know, just like none of us did. We had to figure it out as we go.”

Alana confirmed that she was dating Dralin in January 2021, during an Instagram Q&A.

“You gotta boyfriend?” one fan asked, to which Alana responded, “Yessss.”

The pair went Instagram official in September 2021, with a couple’s photo snapped at a pumpkin patch. 

Dralin was hit with additional backlash after his criminal history made headlines. 

Dralin was arrested on May 29, 2019, on initial charges of statutory rape, according to court documents and police reports. The mother of the alleged victim transported her daughter to the police department to report the incident, which purportedly occurred before Dralin and Alana began dating.

The high school sophomore told police that the encounter was consensual, but Dralin denied any inappropriate contact with the minor. Dralin was initially charged with statutory rape. A charge of making a false statement to police was dismissed after Dralin completed a pretrial diversion program. The case was dismissed in December 2021, after he fulfilled requirements which included drug and alcohol screenings, 20 hours of community service and completing a “moral recognition” program. 

In February, Dralin was arrested for DUI, fleeing police, and outstanding warrants after a three-mile car chase in Monroe County, Georgia. He was arrested for DUI, fleeing, failing to maintain lanes and following too closely.  He also received a speeding citation. 

Monroe County Reporter reported at the time that Alana was in the car during the incident.
