Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ ‘Live’ Show Bombed With Viewers
The first episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, starring Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos invited a mixed bag of opinions from skeptical fans.
Lots of viewers called out the married couple for swapping “fake banter” and offering only a snooze fest during their highly anticipated co-hosting debut. Kelly, 52, was hit with backlash for repeatedly interrupting her hubby during his anecdote about the couple taking a cozy stroll through Central Park.
“We used to run through the park, but now we’re – ” he said before Kelly chimed in — “We used to chase each other.”
“We saw some people who we used to see run and they were now also walking,” Mark, 52, said.
Kelly, who didn’t hesitate to pile on the PDA with her husband during the live broadcast, interjected — “It’s so funny how, I don’t know if it’s age or our knees, whatever it is, time.”
Fans took to Twitter to let their opinions fly about the new daytime duo.
One person tweeted — “Bruuuutal! Last time i watch. I can go to the mall and watch teenagers kiss LESS!!! THE BEGINNING OF THE END.”
Another fan wrote — “I am so happy to see Mark & Kelly this morning….But Kelly could PLEASE LET HIM TALK….!!! OMG…! Let him start and finish a story his way…It’s the only way it’s going work..”
Mark took over for Ryan Seacrest, 49, who announced in February that he would be ending his six year stint on LIVE to move back to Los Angeles, where he would continue his role on American Idol.
Ryan ended his run on the daytime show on Friday. LIVE gave Ryan a splashy sendoff before officially changing the show’s name to Live with Kelly and Mark. The emotional farewell included heartfelt speeches, a cake and gifts.
“I just want to say a few words to you. It’s on behalf of myself and all of us — but mostly me,” Kelly said, tearing up.
She continued — “This has, without question, been the fastest six years of my life, and although you and I have been friends for decades and decades, I feel like I’ve gained through this process a younger brother/oldest son.”
“I am so grateful that our success together on this show has led to us developing an even closer — yet co-dependent — relationship,” she said.
Kelly joined the talk show in 2001 alongside Regis Philbin. Michael Strahan took over Regis’ spot in 2012 and Ryan stepped in four years later. Mark, who appeared as a guest host over the years, had been pursued by ABC executives to take over for Ryan since last summer.
Mark and Kelly wed in May 1996 and share three children together—Michael, 25, Lola, 21, and 20-year-old Joaquin.
