Today Show Unveils Temporary Replacement For Hoda Kotb Amid Her Absence

Hoda Kotb has been missing from the set of Today, only weeks after taking time off to care for her sick daughter, Hope Catherine.

Savannah Guthrie has been hosting the show alongside Hoda’s replacement, Craig Melvin. Melvin usually co-hosts the third hour of the show, but stepped in for Hoda on Tuesday. Savannah was also absent on Monday, with Sheinelle Jones and Melvin stepping in for the morning duo.

Hoda Kotb has yet to reveal the reason for her absence, leaving fans in the dark.  Viewers know that the 58-year-old journalist disappeared from Today in late February with no explanation. She returned to the morning show on March 6, explaining that she had been dealing with a health crisis at home.

“My youngest, Hope, was in the ICU for a few days and in the hospital for a week,” she shared. “I’m so grateful she’s home, she is back home, I was waiting for that day to come, and we are watching her closely.”

Earlier this month, Hoda, also mom to 6-year-old daughter, Haley Joy, chatted with co-host, Jenna Bush-Hager about her absence from Today as she coped with her daughter’s health crisis.

“I feel like, life is one way on a Monday — and we all have our Mondays and we complain about them,” she shared. “We’re like, ‘Oh, what a crummy Monday,’ and then Tuesday rolls around and something really hits hard, and you realize that Monday was actually pretty awesome.”

“So for us, it was little Hope had to go to the hospital, and she was in the ICU for a few days and then the hospital for another week and it was really scary,” the mom of two continued. “And she’s vibrant and brilliant.”

Hoda Kotb went on to express gratitude for “how amazing people are.”

“That’s the thing I learned through all this. The nurses who stood by her all the way. The nurses who checked on her constantly, the doctors who came in, the people who took care of us. I felt like we were held,” she said.

Last week, Hoda shared about how her daughter’s health ordeal had impacted their family. She also addressed how she had comforted Haley as Hope, 3, was showered with attention during her recovery.

“We fall short,” Hoda said. “I was even thinking this too. You know, Hope hasn’t been feeling great, and all the attention’s on Hope and Haley wonders too. Like, ‘I’m here, see me. I need something, too. Carry me. Do what you’re doing for Hope.’”

The two moms asked each other — “How do you do it? How do you make everyone feel seen?”

Hoda said “It’s weird, but I feel like I got most of my resilience in life because of that. You didn’t expect to always be seen and heard.”
