‘The View’ Dismisses Donald Trump’s “Family Man Defense” in Stormy Daniels Hush Money Case
The co-hosts of The View laughed their way through a Hot Topics discussion about the potential criminal charges former President Donald Trump might face “any day now,” during Wednesday’s broadcast.
The daytime panelists mocked Trump’s response after one of his lawyers made the rounds on television, alleging that the public had the “wrong idea about why he paid the hush money to Stormy Daniels.”
Trump’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, recently told George Stephanopoulos that his client paid out the cash “to prevent something coming out — false — but embarrassing to himself, his family, his young son.” The businessman turned politician has denied having an affair with the adult film star.
“It’s not directly related to the campaign,” the lawyer said on “Good Morning America” Monday. “He made this with personal funds to prevent something coming out [that was] false but embarrassing to himself, his family, his young son.”
The women of The View burst out laughing, but Sunny Hostin gave Trump credit for his “creative” excuse.
“The ‘family man’ defense for Donald Trump — that’s a nice stretch. That’s a pretty big stretch,” she said of the “Melania Defense”—named to describe Trump’s alleged decision to pay out the hush money from his “personal funds” to avoid upsetting his wife.
Sunny opined—“I don’t think Melania wants anything to do with the man,” which prompted audience applause.
Alyssa Farah Griffin said that she didn’t understand why Trump’s lawyers were giving interviews to various journalists, including Ari Melber. She added that Melber handed the attorney “his backside” during their sit-down.
Griffin noted—“This is not going to work in your favor … You’re losing your case by going on TV.”
Joy Behar chimed in — “He was sweating like a pig.”
Hostin, still baffled by Trump’s line of defense, asked—“How do you argue that Trump cares so much about his family that he’s a family man?”
Behar sarcastically quipped —“There’s something so touching about it, isn’t there?”
Whoopi Goldberg wrapped the segment, commenting—“The people who still believe that he got, you know, gypped somehow, will still believe that he cared enough … about his wife to pay that money from his personal [funds]. I just don’t understand. If that was the case, then why all the subterfuge? Why is Michael Cohen paying for it?”
Goldberg later issued an apology on Twitter for using the term “gypped.”
The daytime host said in a posted video — “You know when you’re a certain age you use words that you know from when you’re a kid or you remember saying, and that’s what I did today and I shouldn’t have, I should have thought about it a little longer before I said it. But I didn’t and I should have said ‘cheated,’ but I used another word and I’m really, really sorry.”
Some consider the slang term for being cheated or defrauded an offensive slur, due to the word’s association with Romani people, aka “gypsies.”
