Savannah Guthrie Abruptly Exits ‘Today’ During Live Broadcast

Savannah Guthrie disappeared from the set of the Today show midway through Tuesday’s broadcast, raising concern among fans when she did not return after a commercial break, early in the live show.

The 51-year-old began her routine hosting duties at 7am ET, but did not come back after a commercial break, about a half hour into the show. “Today 3rd Hour” host, Sheinelle Jones, shared an update on her colleague just before 9 am.

“By the way, it has been an interesting morning for us. As we said, Savannah left early, she wasn’t feeling great, so she took a Covid test,” Sheinelle said, alongside Al Roker and Carson Daly.

Sheinelle, 44, added that Savannah “rushed home to rest up” after learning the results of the Covid test.

“So, Savannah, we love you. Wishing you a speedy recovery,” she concluded.

Savannah contracted COVID-19 twice before, in January 2022 and again in May. The NBC anchor, who has been vaccinated and boosted against the virus, previously revealed that she was giving up social media for Lent, so no health update was posted on social media.

Savannah’s co-hosts did not hint at who might take her place on the daytime panel, as the anchor recovers.

Savannah’s abrupt exit came amid her co-anchor, Hoda Kotb’s unexplained absence, leaving the NBC show without both its main anchors. Hoda, 58, has been absent from “Today” and “Today with Hoda and Jenna” since February 17.

Hoda has yet to comment on the reason behind her absence, but sparked concern among viewers after she posted several cryptic quotes on social media.

On Monday morning, she shared a graphic that read “Choose Hope” with two heart emojis in the caption.

On February 26, Hoda shared another image that read “Sometimes miracles are just people with kind hearts” wishing her fans and followers a “Happy Sunday xo.” She later shared four other quotes that touched on themes like bravery, strength, and perseverance through difficult trials. The mom of two also shared a quote about raising “strong women.” The TV personality referenced “dark clouds” in a separate post.

Carson, Willie Geist from “Sunday Today,” Tom Llamas of “World News Tonight” and “3rd Hour of Today” co-host Craig Melvin will fill in for Hoda on both the early show and alongside Jenna for the fourth hour.
