Kody Brown Admits He Married Christine For Clout

Kody Brown admitted that his decision to marry Christine Brown was tied to status within their church during Part 2 of the Sister Wives: One-on-One special. Fans took to social media to react to Kody’s shocking disclosure as the episode aired.

The Brown family made their reality TV debut over a decade ago as members of the Apostolic United Brethren, a Fundamentalist Mormon faith that accepts the practice of polygamy.

Kody’s plural marriage has been crumbling for years, but the narrative imploded during Season 17 as the show featured Kody’s third wife, Christine, making the decision to leave her spiritual husband and the Brown family. Kody’s first and second wives, Meri and Janelle, both confirmed their official splits from Kody shortly thereafter.

Christine and Kody announced that they were parting ways in November 2021, after a 25-year marriage.

Kody and Christine previously hinted that their courtship and understated wedding were not romantic, but Kody spilled the real tea during his chat with One-on-One host, Sukanya Krishnan.

“I felt a lot of pressure…Christine was basically royalty in our church,” Kody explained. “I look back and it wasn’t fair for me to go ‘oh this will make me cool in our church.’”

“I was a polygamist,” he quipped to Sukanya, who asked how his ego played into his decision. “It’s all ego baby.”

Interestingly, the early plot line of the family’s story featured the group fleeing Utah, after becoming the subject of an investigation by the Lehi Police Department. Kody cited religious persecution for his decision to relocate his family to a more “open-minded” place, Las Vegas, Nevada. The supposed concern was that Kody would be prosecuted and the family divided, similar to what happened to Christine’s grandfather, an AUB leader.

Fans reacted to Kody’s stunning admission on Twitter, as the episode unfolded.

One fan tweeted—“Wait, wait wait! Kody just said he got into polygamy because of his ego. He wasn’t contented with his marriage with Meri, so he married Janelle, but they were butting heads. Then comes Christine, the “royalty” in their church, & he married her to look cool. WTH!?”

Another wrote—“So kody just admitted the only reason he married Christine because her family was considered royalty inside their church wow he gets more shallow. Every time he opens, his mouth.”

A viewer surmised—“When Kody married Janelle, Meri, Christine it was a loveless religious arrangement. It worked b/c he could float b/w homes, get clout @ church & be a reality star. But when he fell in love with Robyn it f-it up b/c now he only wants to be with Robyn.”

Another tweeted—“Kody admits to marrying Christine, who was polygamist royalty, because it made him cool in the church. This, I believe.”

One user wrote—“Kody says how dare you give up but admits he married christine for the cred with the church. Gee why would someone leave?”

A second person added—“Kody telling Christine he was never attracted to her during their whole marriage is quite possibly the cruelest thing I’ve ever seen on reality tv. He’s a social climbing fraud if he only married her bc of her family’s high standing in the church!”

The Sister Wives: One-on-One special concludes on Sunday at 10 pm ET on TLC.
