Prosecutors Demand Jen Shah Receive 10 Years In Prison
Prosecutors are not in the Christmas spirit and seeking to send Jen Shah to prison for ten years, after she defrauded elderly people.
Assistant U.S Attorney Kiersten A. Fletcher wrote the letter in reference to Jen Shan’s upcoming sentencing on January 6, 2023. They began, “For nearly a decade, the defendant was an integral leader of a wide-ranging, nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme that victimized thousands of innocent people.”
The letter went on to describe how the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star targeted elderly people.
She continued, “Many of those people suffered significant financial hardship and damage. At the defendant’s direction, victims were defrauded over and over again until they had nothing left. She and her co-conspirators persisted in their conduct until the victims’ bank accounts were empty, their credit cards were at their limits, and there was nothing more to take.”
The Assistant U.S Attorney submitted this harsh sentence request after Jen Shah submitted letters from her husband, Coach Shah, sons Sharieff Jr. and Omar and a super fan — pleading for a lighter sentence, as the reality star faces a potential 14 years behind bars. In addition to prison time, Jen was ordered to pay restitution of up to $9.5 million.
In July Jen Shah pleaded guilty to participating in wire fraud in a telemarketing scheme. The prosecutors also stated that neither The Federal Trade Commission’s investigations nor the arrest of her co-conspirators deterred Jen. “To be clear, the defendant was not ignorant of these developments: she took a series of increasingly extravagant steps to conceal her criminal conduct from the authorities.”
They also accused Jen of directing others to lie and put bank accounts in other people’s names. “She required payment in cash, she instructed others to delete text messages and electronic documents, she moved some of her operations overseas, and she tried to put computers and other evidence beyond the reach of investigators.
“These efforts were not short-lived or narrow in scope. She engaged in a yearslong, comprehensive effort to hide her continued role in the scheme.” Prosecutors continued to say Shah maintained her innocence until the 11th hour after receiving Government trial exhibits and witness statements. “She [Jen] then went on a public offensive and tried to profit off the charges by selling ‘Justice for Jen’ merchandise. In light of her conduct and her post-arrest behavior, her belated expressions of remorse ring hollow.” The prosecutors finished the letter adding, “For the reasons set forth below she should be sentenced to a term of 120 months imprisonment.”
The persecutors letter comes days after Jen’s lawyer Priya Chaudry sought a three year sentence for her client.
Jen’s husband begged the court to go easy on his wife, he claims that the mom of two has “genuine remorse” for her actions.
“Jen has never been arrested or detained for any crime. My wife’s current legal predicament was caused by a confluence of events that came together at various points, which caused her to spiral out of control,” the letter reads.
Sharrieff, 51, said that the couple’s strained relationship led to his wife making “catastrophically bad business decisions and develop relationships with awful people.”
Jen’s husband blamed himself for his wife’s poor decisions, as he was often absent due to a demanding travel schedule.
“Because of my absence, I was not able to see how badly my wife was suffering,” he wrote. “As I think about it now, I saw her spending more time in our bedroom alone. She often fell asleep in out children’s bed waiting for me to come home. She would constantly tell me that she feels so alone.”
Additionally, Coach Shah mentioned that the family suffered many losses, including family members that passed away during the time period Jen was operating the $5 million telemarketing scheme. Sharrieff added that his wife already, “took the first huge step in making things right by acknowledging her own guilt and accountability.”
The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City airs Wednesday nights, at 9pm ET, on Bravo.
