Janelle Brown Quietly Confirms Split from Kody Brown
Janelle Brown has quietly confirmed that she’s officially split from her spiritual husband, Kody Brown. Sister Wives fans took notice when Kody’s second wife updated her Instagram bio with the words “Just me.” Her previous bio featured a “sister wife” reference, according to some perceptive followers.
A source previously told In Touch that the mom of six had made the break from the TLC patriarch after Kody’s third wife, Christine Brown, left the family. Kody and Christine announced their breakup in November 2021, after a 25-year marriage.
“Janelle is a strong independent woman and realized she can do it on her own,” an insider told the outlet, explaining that she “outgrew” her spiritual husband.
Viewers know that the couple butted heads during the COVID-19 pandemic after Kody implemented strict protocols on the plural family. Janelle and Kody, who spiritually wed in 1993, share six children, Madison, Logan, Gabriel, Garrison, Hunter, and Savanah. Kody’s demands frustrated Janelle and two of their sons, Gabriel and Garrison. Janelle even told Kody to “f**k off” during a heated discussion over how to spend the holidays.
Janelle’s issues with Kody became more glaring as Christine’s exit from the family began to unfold on Season 17 of the long-running TLC show. Janelle admitted that she didn’t need a man in her life and was “good” on her own after a heated conversation played out on Sunday’s episode.
“In the last 18 months, I’ve realized that I’m pretty good,” she explained. “I’m independent, and I’m not going to stand here and be yelled at. I just don’t need it. I don’t deserve it, and I don’t need it.”
In an episode that aired earlier this month, Janelle confessed that she was reassessing the couple’s compatibility factor.
“I never thought I’d be in a place where I would be questioning my relationship, but the last few years, I’ve began to wonder if we’re compatible anymore [sic],” she confessed. “Maybe this doesn’t work anymore for me, I don’t know.”
Christine’s aunt, Kristyn Decker, explained during a recent interview that the family’s fundamentalist Mormon religion frowns on men divorcing wives more than on women making decisions to leave.
“That’s why [Kody] wants them to leave,” Kristyn told In Touch. “If they’re going to, if they kick him out, then they are looked down upon much worse. Kody’s got to get them to [leave on their own].”
Janelle reportedly made the break months ago but has yet to confirm that she’s no longer part of the Brown brood. The pair agreed that their marriage might not go the distance, after confronting their relationship issues in a raw exchange featured during a recent episode of Sister Wives.
Meanwhile, Meri remains Kody’s spiritual wife and Robyn his only legal wife. Kody shares only a platonic relationship with Meri, so with Janelle out of the picture the patriarch is obliterating his narrative by living in a monogamous relationship.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 pm ET on TLC.
